Circular meetings

Slack and Zoom are greatI was thinking a good feature might be support for a circleEach participant gets a chance to speak one at a time. When they are done they pass the stick to the next person in the circle who speaks to the groupWe do this now but at the end of a persons speech they have to tag the next personEveryone needs to remember who spoke in order to tag someone who has not spokenThis part is a pain it would be nice to at least have some history of some kind to know who has spoken so farThat would only work for the first pass thru the circle (we usually only go around once)And then we go to the parking lot mode where we have interactive conversationsThis is what we do in a regular checkup meeting a lot of people call a SCRUM meetingA plug-in for Circular or SCRUM or built in feature would differentiate Slack from other products Circle meetings are to give every one a chance to get the floor and not. Be interrupted until they pass a stick or physical indicating that they have the floorAlso good for a gathering of friends and relatives What participants need to know is who is the next speaker so they know who is nextIn a physical meeting it’s the person to your rightPlease consider adding a way to make it easier. Raising your hand is interesting but causes people to go out of order…. If this is what they are trying to achieveOn slack I would love captioning Zoom has it already

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back for iPad

The recent iPad App update misses the mark quite considerably. In some ways, it is almost as if Slack doesn’t understand its users. No longer easy to see all unread messages in one place - which was a feature I regularly requested for the desktop app. Now, the iPad app has been turned to be quite bland. Seems like the “Dark Mode” folks won the design argument; as the new app no longer supports the desktop or web app color themes; which now makes the iPad app incredibly difficult to know at a glance which team you’re viewing. Also frustrating are the 3 or so “Unread Direct Messages” you can see, when you tap “Show All” it takes you to the “Direct Messages” sidebar that sorts in its own way, with unreads strewn about. Also, Direct message addresses are much harder to read; too much text all clumped together. Unfortunate for the iPad app, Slack has taken a once very useful version (preferred as a second screen in some cases over the desktop app) and made it into a giant iPhone app. The iPhone app now also suffers from this Direct Message unread messages “Show All” problem. The only way to return some of the missing sort and see all DMs on the iPad app is to select the sort option of “by recent” but it does not group unreads. 7 years using Slack, and this is by far the most disappointing iPad app “upgrade.” Repackage the desktop app for the iPad and call it “Slack Pro” for iPad Pro users who use their iPad in place of a laptop.

Texting but more complicated

I used this app for several years at a past job. I would say it is like texting with a few small additions like the ability to tag people and notify them of something specific via an accompanying notification. That sounds useful until you actually use it and get tagged dozens of times an hour. Really this is basically just a messaging app with one problem. If you get a message from someone, or multiple people in group message, and you read it and think I will come back to this later and minimize the app when you come back later it is gone. It’s not really gone but it’s not still displayed as it would be if you minimize your texting app or WhatsApp. Instead you have to search for it. If it’s a message from one person you just have to search for that one person and sift through every message they have ever sent. If it has multiple people and you can only remember one you just have to search through every message that one person has ever sent anyone in your organization. If this were free I would say it is maybe useful as an alternative to using direct text messaging. If it costs anything I would say it needs some work. I could see it being good with some tweaks but it isn’t as of my last use which was in May of 2025.

Texting but more complicated

I used this app for several years at a past job. That sounds useful until you actually use it and get tagged dozens of times an hour. Really this is basically just a messaging app with one problem. If you get a message from someone, or multiple people in group message, and you read it and think I will come back to this later and minimize the app when you come back later it is gone. It’s not really gone but it’s not still displayed as it would be if you minimize your texting app or WhatsApp. Instead you have to search for it. Bug Fixes • Online indicators for guest accounts were in bad shape — that is, they weren't displaying their correct shapes (squares and triangles), defaulting instead to the familiar circle. We've quite literally squared the circle on this one, returning guest indicators to their proper geometric glory. • The mobile emoji picker wasn't taking into account your most frequently-used emoji on desktop, so if your favorite handshake reaction wasn't making the handoff to mobile, that one was on us. We promise not to let that happen again. Shake on it? • Different skin tones of the same emoji will once again be grouped together when reacting to a message. No matter our complexion, we're all one human family, even when represented as cartoon pictographs.
