Hello, and thank you for the feedback.Participant tracking is based on official timing data, such as when a participant crosses timing checkpoints along the course. Using this information, we estimate their position between checkpoints. For some events, we also support tracking participants using their actual phone location when they are signed in to the app. This is the exact feature you’re describing. However, many large events choose not to enable this feature due to privacy, since participants often prefer to share their progress at frequent checkpoints rather than their exact phone location throughout the race. For these events, we rely on official timing data. With checkpoints sometimes as close as 5K apart, this generally provides a good tracking experience. To make these estimates clear, we show the participant’s estimated position moving on the course, along with an orange line highlighting the section between their most recent checkpoint and their next checkpoint. While timing data sometimes needs to be adjusted on race day for certain participants, this approach provides reliable tracking for the vast majority of users and is the industry norm.If you’re willing, please reach out to us at hello@racerecord.com to share more about your experience with the app and how we can improve for next year. We appreciate the feedback.
