mDone
Task manager for Vikunja
Free
Take control of your tasks with mDone, a native task manager for iPhone, iPad and Mac, built for your self-hosted Vikunja server.
If you run your own Vikunja instance and want a polished, native way to manage your tasks, mDone is made for you: a thoughtful, focused interface for your self-hosted productivity setup.
KEY FEATURES
Quick Add That Understands You
Type "Buy milk tomorrow at 5pm +Home !2 *shopping" and mDone files it in the right project, with the due date, priority and label already set. Everything it picks up shows as a chip before you add the task, so nothing happens by surprise. Switch it on in Settings.
Smart Lists
Stay on top of what matters. Today, Upcoming and Overdue views organise your tasks, so you always know what to focus on next.
Current Tasks
Keep long-running work top of mind. Mark a task as Current and it stays pinned above Today, with a progress bar you can update and a gentle nudge when it has sat untouched for too long.
Kanban Boards
Open any project as a board. Drag cards between columns and reorder them, exactly as they appear in Vikunja's web app.
Subtasks, Checklists and Labels
Break big tasks into subtasks, link related tasks, tick off checklists written in a task's description, and add or create labels without leaving the app.
Projects and Favorites
Organise tasks into projects and sub-projects, sort them by date, priority or your own manual order, and keep the ones you use most one tap away.
Siri, Hands-Free
Say "Add a task in mDone" and Siri adds it without opening the app. Works over CarPlay, on AirPods and on Apple Watch.
Home Screen and Lock Screen Widgets
See your tasks at a glance: today's agenda, what is coming up, and anything overdue.
Focus Timer with Live Activities
Work through a task with purpose. Live Activities keep the timer on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island.
Repeating Tasks
Daily, weekly, monthly or custom intervals. Completing a repeating task schedules its next occurrence.
Calendar View
See your tasks across days and weeks alongside your calendar events. Spot the gaps and plan ahead.
Offline Support
mDone caches your tasks so you can keep working without a connection. Changes sync back to your server when you are online again.
Privacy First
Zero analytics, zero tracking, zero third-party SDKs. mDone talks only to your Vikunja server, and your data stays entirely under your control.
Available in English and Simplified Chinese.
REQUIREMENTS
- A self-hosted Vikunja server (vikunja.io)
- An account on that server
mDone is open source. Visit the GitHub repository to report issues, request features, or contribute.
more I've tried a few different vikunja apps, and on iOS there it's not too many options available right now and this one is absolutely the best one. Smooth UI, visually pleasing. Not over designed, great to work with

Hey just wanted to say I hope you are able to keep developing this, it’s currently the best Vikunja app I’ve tried. The widget is a game changer!

Assign tasks to the people you share projects with.
- New Team features, off by default. Turn them on in Settings > Teams if you share Vikunja projects with other people: tasks show who they are assigned to, you can assign people when adding a task or from its details, and the advanced filter adds Assigned to me.
- Completing, rescheduling or editing a task no longer removes its assignees in Vikunja.
1.21.0 2d ago
Focus that moves on to the next task.
- New Focus Run. Long-press a task and choose Start Focus Run: tick it off and the next task in the list comes up in focus straight away, until the list runs out or you end the run.
- Skip moves on without completing. The focus screen shows what is up next and how many are left, and a finished run tells you how many tasks you got through.
- A reminder set for a specific time now stays at that time. It used to show as "At time of due date" after saving and notify you at the due time instead.
- The Inbox's advanced filter now behaves: Status: Done shows your completed tasks, Reset brings every task back, and a filter stays on when the list refreshes.
- Clearing a search brings your full list back straight away, and search now matches task descriptions and works offline.
- Kanban boards show completed tasks, so a Done column holds the same cards as in the Vikunja web app.
- A task added to a project sorted Manually appears at the top straight away, where Vikunja puts it.
- Completing a repeating task you are focusing on now ends that focus session.
1.20.0 Oct 17
Type a task the way you would say it.
- New smart parsing for quick add. Type "Buy milk tomorrow at 5pm +Home !2 *shopping" and mDone files "Buy milk" in Home, due tomorrow at 5:00 PM, priority 2, labelled shopping.
- Each part mDone picks up shows as a chip under the field before you add the task. Tap a chip's X to keep those words in the title instead.
- Off by default: switch it on in Settings > Tasks > "Smart parsing in quick add".
- On the Mac, the New Task window fills in the project, due date and priority as you type.
- Siri and Shortcuts understand it too: say a date, a project or a priority and the task lands where you meant.
- Understands Chinese dates as well, such as 明天下午3点 or 下周.
- Available on both iPhone and Mac.
1.19.0 Sep 24
Simplified Chinese, and a say in where new tasks land.
- mDone is now available in Simplified Chinese (简体中文), including the widgets and the system permission prompts. It follows your device language, so there is nothing to switch on.
- A new "Default project" setting picks where a task goes when you add it from the Inbox, ask Siri, or use the Mac's New Task window, instead of whichever project happened to be listed first.
- "Inbox adds tasks due" sets whether a task typed into the Inbox is due today, tomorrow, or not at all.
- Projects you have not given a colour now show a hollow marker in the Projects tab and the Mac sidebar, so they no longer look like projects you deliberately coloured blue.
- Each event dot on the calendar's month view now uses its own calendar's colour, so days with events from different calendars are easy to tell apart.
- Fixed a saved filter opened from the Projects tab coming back empty in the list view. Its matching tasks now show there as well as on the board.
1.18.0 Sep 20
Checklists inside task descriptions.
- A description written in Vikunja's web editor can hold a list of checkboxes, for the steps of a task that is not one and done. They used to show as plain bullets with no sign of what was ticked. Each item now has a checkbox you can tap to tick or untick, saved straight away as in the web app, with a "2 of 3 done" line and progress bar above the list.
- Task rows and Kanban cards show the same count, so you can see how far along a task is without opening it.
- A tick the server refuses to save goes back to unticked, with the usual error message, so a tick you can see is a tick that was saved.
- Available on both iPhone and Mac.
1.17.0 Sep 14
Labels, manual ordering, two-factor login and an iPad detail pane.
- Add labels to a task and take them off again from the task's Labels section. Pick from every label on your server, or type a new name to create one and put it straight on the task.
- Sort a project by "Manual" and drag tasks into whatever order you like, on iPhone, iPad and Mac. It is the same order Vikunja's web app shows, and it leaves due dates alone.
- Drag Kanban cards up and down a column or into another column. Drop on the top half of a card to go above it, the bottom half to go below.
- Each project opens in the view you left it in, list or board, and a new setting picks the default for projects you have not switched.
- Sign in with a username and password on an account that uses two-factor authentication. A code field appears beside the password when your server supports it.
- On iPad, tasks open in a panel beside the list instead of a sheet. Escape cancels and Cmd-S saves from a hardware keyboard.
- Fixed single sign-on crashing the Mac app the moment your identity provider handed back to it.
- Fixed API tokens created without every permission being logged out on launch. The app now keeps you signed in and says which action the token cannot do.
- Fixed a wrong username or password showing a generic error instead of saying so.
- Fixed a task moved to another project sitting at the bottom of its new list until you came back.
- Available on both iPhone and Mac.
1.16.0 Sep 11
Add tasks with Siri, hands-free.
- Say "Add a task in mDone" and Siri asks what the task is, adds it, and reads back where it went and when it is due, without opening the app. It works wherever Siri does, including in the car over CarPlay, on AirPods and on Apple Watch. Say "Add a task to Home in mDone" to choose a project. With no connection the task is kept and sent when you reconnect.
- Tasks added by voice are due today at your default due time (6:00 PM unless you change it). A new setting switches that to tomorrow or to no due date.
- On iPad the tab bar can expand into a sidebar, and hardware keyboards get shortcuts: Cmd-N for a new task, Cmd-R to refresh, Cmd-1 to Cmd-4 to switch sections.
- Notifications you have read now stay read after a restart.
- A damaged local database no longer stops the app from opening. Your unsynced edits and focus history are rescued and the cached tasks are rebuilt from your server.
- Groundwork for translations: all of the app's text is ready for its first languages.
- Available on both iPhone and Mac.
1.15.0 Sep 4
Sign in with single sign-on. If your Vikunja is set up with an OIDC provider such as Authelia, Keycloak or Authentik, the login screen now offers a "Continue with ..." button for it. Sign-in happens in the system browser, so you can see the real address of the page you type your password into, and the app never sees it. The login screen also adapts to your server: if password login is turned off, those fields are hidden.
You can now edit tasks while offline. Completing, rescheduling, editing or deleting a task takes effect straight away and syncs when you reconnect. Rows with changes still waiting show a "Not synced" marker, and queued changes are merged carefully so an offline edit does not overwrite changes made somewhere else in the meantime.
1.14.0 Aug 21
Offline mode now works properly. Your tasks, projects and labels are saved as you sync and appear the moment you open the app, even with no connection, instead of a loading spinner and an empty list. When your server cannot be reached, mDone now says so clearly and shows your last synced tasks.
Fixed a bug where completing, postponing or rescheduling a task, or changing its progress, could clear that task's description, priority and progress on your server.
1.12.2 Aug 12
Task date ranges, plus fixes for busy accounts.
- Give a task an optional start and end date from its detail view. Tasks spanning several days now appear on every included day in the calendar, so multi-day work stays visible.
- All of your projects and labels now load, not just the first 50.
- Kanban columns now show every card, and long project lists keep their order all the way down.
- Available on both iPhone and Mac.
1.12.0 Aug 11
Hide all-day calendar events, plus a Kanban fix.
- New setting to hide all-day calendar events: Settings > Calendar > "Show all-day events". Turn it off to keep day-long events out of your Calendar and Today views. It stays on by default, so nothing changes unless you flip it.
- The Kanban board shows your tasks again on current Vikunja servers (v0.24 and later). Columns previously loaded but sat empty.
- Available on both iPhone and Mac.
1.11.0 Jul 30
Subtasks: break big tasks into steps.
- Tasks now show their subtasks nested underneath in every list, with a progress badge on the parent (e.g. 2/5 done).
- Add subtasks from a task's detail view, or link any existing task from any project as a subtask, with search.
- Tick subtasks off right from the parent task's detail view; the progress badge updates instantly.
- Relations created in Vikunja on the web (Blocked By, Precedes, Duplicates and more) now show on the task and can be removed.
- Available on both iPhone and Mac.
1.10.0 Jul 21
Pick your task list size, plus Shortcuts and Siri fixes.
- Task row size: choose Compact, Standard, or Large in Settings > Appearance. Compact fits more tasks on screen; Standard keeps the familiar look.
- The "Quick Add Task" action in the Shortcuts app now works: it opens mDone with the quick-add bar ready to type. It previously failed with an internal error.
- Quick Add Task is now a proper App Shortcut and works with Siri: just say "Add a task in mDone".
- Removed the broken "Open Task" Shortcuts action.
1.9.0 Jul 19
Project hierarchy: organise your projects into folders.
- Sub-projects now nest under their parent, indented and sorted, matching Vikunja on the web.
- Expand or collapse any project with a tap; it stays that way next time you open the app.
- Set a parent when creating or editing a project, or use "Move to…" to reorganise your hierarchy.
- Available on both iPhone and Mac.
1.8.0 Jul 13
Current tasks: keep long-running work from slipping out of sight.
- Mark any task as Current to pin it to a dedicated section at the top of your list, above Today.
- Track momentum with a progress bar you can update from the task's detail view or a quick menu.
- An idle badge appears when a Current task hasn't been touched for a while, so slow-burn projects don't stall silently. Set the idle threshold in Settings.
- Available on iPhone and Mac.
1.7.0 Jun 17
Bug fix for the home screen widgets. The Today's Tasks and Upcoming widgets no longer push their header off the top, or clip the bottom rows, when you have more tasks than fit. This was most noticeable with larger text sizes. The header now stays in place, the visible tasks fit neatly, and a "+N more" count appears on the last line.
1.6.1 Jun 6
New: Calm Mode (Settings > Tasks). A no-stress option that stops singling out overdue tasks - no red due dates, no separate Overdue list or counts. Overdue tasks simply appear in Today, in the app and your widgets. Off by default.
1.6.0 Jun 3
You can now manage projects without leaving the app:
• Create projects with a title, description, colour, and favourite
• Edit or rename any project
• Archive projects you're done with — and restore them later from the new Archived view
• Delete a project, with a clear warning since it also removes the project's tasks
On iPhone, tap + on the Projects tab. On Mac, use the + next to Projects in the sidebar (or press Command-Shift-N).
1.5.0 Jun 2
This update adds an About screen in Settings, with the app version, a link to report bugs or request features, a link to the source on GitHub, and ways to support development.
1.4.1 Jun 1
Shake your iPhone right after completing a task to undo it. mDone shows a quick confirmation naming the task ("Undo completing "…"?") so an accidental shake never silently reverses anything, and only your most recent completion can be undone.
1.4.0 May 29
• Choose which of your device calendars appear in mDone (Settings › Calendar).
• Set a default due time for tasks you add to Today without typing a time (Settings › Tasks).
• Tasks you add to Today are no longer marked overdue straight away.
• All-day tasks no longer look overdue until the day is actually over.
• Edits to a task’s description now appear immediately instead of only after restarting the app.
1.3.1 May 29
What's new in 1.3.0
• Estimated duration on tasks
Add a quick estimate (15m / 30m / 1h / 2h / 4h, or a custom hours+minutes value) when creating a task — from the Quick Add bar or later from the task detail screen. As you type a new task title, mDone can suggest an estimate based on how long similar tasks you've focused on actually took.
• Focus history on every task
Task detail now shows the total focused time and number of sessions for any task you've used the Focus Timer on. Useful when estimating similar work next time.
• Focus History Sync (optional, advanced)
In Settings → Focus History Sync, point mDone at your own self-hosted focus service to back up and analyse your focus history across tasks. Leave the URL blank to keep everything on-device.
• Widget customisation
Long-press the Today's Tasks or Upcoming widget and tap Edit Widget to choose font size (Compact / Standard / Large), pick what to show (Today + Overdue / Today only / Overdue only), and toggle the tap-to-complete and "+" Add Task buttons. New Small (1×1) and Extra Large (iPad) layouts.
• Quick Add from the widget
A "+" button in the Today's Tasks and Upcoming widget headers jumps straight to the Inbox with the "Add a task…" field already focused.
• Start of week
Settings → Appearance lets you override the calendar's first day (System / Sunday / Monday / Saturday).
Plus fixes for duplicated widget rows, the calendar weekday header, advanced filter date ranges, the +24h swipe action, and the version label in Settings.
1.3.0 May 18
What’s new in 1.1.2:
• Task descriptions written in Vikunja’s web UI now render with formatting (bullets, bold, italic, links) instead of showing raw HTML markup. Description previews are also now shown by default when a description is present.
• Description preview now respects Dynamic Type / system text size.
• Fixed a crash when opening projects whose tasks had duplicate position data on the Vikunja server.
1.1.2 May 14
Sort your tasks your way - You can now sort tasks by due date, priority, or title and toggle between ascending and descending order. Available on both iOS and macOS.
Reliability improvements - The app no longer drops server connections when switching between apps. Data automatically refreshes when returning to the app. Fixed an issue where clicking a task on macOS did not open its details.
Bug fixes - Fixed calendar permission prompt timing for macOS. Widget version now stays in sync with the app.
1.1.1 Apr 12
- Smarter task grouping: tasks are now organised into Overdue, Today, Tomorrow, This Week, Upcoming, and No Date sections
- Tasks added from the Inbox now default to today's due date
- Postpone tasks by 24 hours with a quick swipe action
- Bug fixes for project task caching and Live Activity display
1.1.0 Mar 24
Assign tasks to the people you share projects with.
- New Team features, off by default. Turn them on in Settings > Teams if you share Vikunja projects with other people: tasks show who they are assigned to, you can assign people when adding a task or from its details, and the advanced filter adds Assigned to me.
- Completing, rescheduling or editing a task no longer removes its assignees in Vikunja.
