REFERENCE TONES THAT SOUND LIKE YOUR INSTRUMENT Click a string, or press a note key, and you now hear that string: plucked steel for guitar, bass, mandolin and banjo, nylon for ukulele, and a bowed string for violin, viola, cello and double bass. Every tone holds exactly the right pitch. A DISPLAY THAT TELLS YOU WHICH WAY TO TURN A quiet caption on the display now says Tune up, Tune down or In tune, and lamps either side of the display light on the side you're off, in the menu-bar tuner too. It settles instead of flickering at the edge of in tune. And the display has glass over it now: a faint sheen and reflection that follow your pointer. Prefer plain LEDs? Turn off Display glass in Settings. A CLEANER, CALMER WINDOW The tuning picker groups tunings by instrument and shows each one's strings. Settings are larger and easier to read, on glass. The string buttons are glass now too, like ChromTuner on iPhone and the web. And Window → Note Window shows just the note you're playing, on a staff, in a small floating window.

The Apple Watch metronome keeps playing when you lower your wrist. Before, it went quiet as soon as your arm came down to strum, and the button still said Stop when you looked again. Now the click and the taps carry on with the screen off, for up to an hour at a time. Thanks to the player who reported it.

Fixes the tuner on Apple Watch. Once the app had been in the background — wrist down, a glance at the watch face — the tuner stopped listening, and the screen stayed on RAISE TO TUNE until you reopened the app. It now picks straight back up when you return. Thanks to the player who reported it.

REMINDERS THAT ACTUALLY REACH YOU ChromTuner has tracked string life since 1.2, but it could only tell you if you went looking. Now it comes to you: a heads-up a week before a set is due, then once more on the day. Nothing while a set is overdue — one reminder, not a daily nag. TELL IT WHEN THE STRINGS ACTUALLY WENT ON Before this, every set was recorded as fitted the moment you added the instrument — which is almost never true. You add a tuner to a guitar you already own, with strings already on it. Now the fitted date is yours to set, so the countdown starts from the truth instead of from the day you found the app. A STRINGS PAGE THAT ANSWERS THE QUESTION Cards now say what you want to know — "10 days left", "14 days overdue" — instead of a number that only means something if you remember the interval. Instruments that are due sort to the top, and when heavy playing rather than time is what wore a set out, it says so. GERMAN LANGUAGE ChromTuner now also speaks german. The whole app — every screen, every reminder, every setting. LOUDER REFERENCE TONES Tap a string and you'll hear it. The reference tones were quietly delivering about half the level they were meant to, which was hardest on the low strings, exactly where a phone speaker needs the most help.
