ZoneSprout - US Garden Planner

Planting Charts & Bed Planner

Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS.

Most planting calendars ask for your USDA zone and stop there. But a zone only describes one thing: how cold it gets on the worst night of winter. It says nothing about when your season actually starts, how long it lasts, or whether your July will cook a lettuce. Savannah, Georgia and Coos Bay, Oregon are both zone 9a. Their last frosts are seven weeks apart, and one gets 75 more days above 90°F than the other. Any calendar that treats them the same is going to disappoint one of those gardeners. ZoneSprout works out your dates from your state AND your zone together. WHAT GOES INTO A DATE • Last frost, averaged over 20 years • First frost, averaged over 20 years • Summer heat — days above 90°F, over 30 years • Winter chill • Days to maturity for that specific plant • Chill hours the plant needs Every date is calculated from weather records. None of it is written by a chatbot. PLANTING CHARTS FOR YOUR EXACT LOCATION See when to start seeds indoors, when to transplant, when to direct sow, when it will bloom, and when you will be picking — for more than 2,600 plants, laid out across the year. Open a chart for one plant, for a whole category like vegetables or herbs, or for everything you grow. Print any chart, or save it as a PDF to send to whoever is watering while you are away. SEARCH BY WHAT THE PACKET SAYS Seed packets say Sun Gold, Cherokee Purple, Blue Lake — not Tomato and Bean. ZoneSprout knows more than 4,400 named varieties, so the thing in your hand is the thing you look up. WHAT IS THIS PLANT? Photograph anything you cannot name and get the likeliest matches, with reference pictures to check against. If it is one of ours, you also get whether it is native where you garden, whether it is a problem there, and when to plant it. A GARDEN BED PLANNER THAT FITS REAL GARDENS Lay out the beds you actually have, not the tidy rectangle most planners assume. Set the size in feet and inches, choose rectangular or round, and plant it square by square. Seed trays too — 72-cell, 50-cell, whatever you sow into. Spacing is worked out for you: drop in a tomato and it knows how much room it needs, and what will not fit. WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK See only what is due now — sowing, planting out, pruning, feeding, harvest — in the order your season reaches them. No scrolling twelve months to find today. NATIVE PLANTS, CHECKED PROPERLY Plants genuinely native to your state, verified against USDA records rather than guessed from a hardiness zone. Filter by what each one feeds: honeybees, native bees, butterflies, moths, hummingbirds, songbirds, ladybugs, bats and more. A JOURNAL THAT REMEMBERS Record every sowing, every harvest and every failure, with photographs. Next spring starts from what actually happened in your garden last year, rather than from memory. BUILT FOR THE UNITED STATES ONLY Every date comes from US frost records, US heat history and USDA hardiness zones. A garden outside the US would get confidently wrong answers, so we would rather say plainly that this app is not for you than take your money. WHAT IT COSTS Try everything free for seven days. After that, ZoneSprout Pro is $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year — one subscription with every feature included, no adverts and nothing sold on the side. Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. The subscription renews automatically unless it is cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, and your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours of the end of that period. You can manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple Account settings, including during the free trial, at no charge. Any unused portion of a free trial is forfeited when a subscription is purchased. Cancelling never deletes anything. Your beds, plantings, journal and photographs stay exactly as they are, and are waiting when you come back. Fixed: planting cards in frost-free places no longer talk about spring. In south Florida, coastal southern California, the Rio Grande Valley, the Mississippi delta and Hawaii, the first frost of the year falls before the last one — there is no winter for spring and autumn to sit either side of. The app was heading the December half of south Florida's October-to-January broccoli season "Spring planting". Those cards now read "First sowing" and "Second sowing", named for the order they actually happen in. 37,131 windows were affected. The small season tag beside a card's title is gone. Everywhere the seasons mean something it printed the word the title already said, and where they mean nothing it was the reason the title could not say anything true. The tab you are on is now obvious. Home, Plants, Natives, My garden and Settings were separated only by two shades of green, which at the size of a tab bar is almost no difference at all. The selected one now sits on a filled shape, with its label in a heavier weight. Fixed, Android: taking or choosing a photograph could fail with a wall of Java text. When Android reclaims memory it destroys the screen behind the camera, and the picker it had registered goes with it. The app now waits for the screen to come back and tries once more, which is usually the end of it — and if it still cannot, it says so in a sentence. Fixed: the note under a plant with two sowings said the later one "matures as the weather cools". That describes a northern autumn. In south Florida the later sowing is cut in February and March, into a season that is warming.
