iLet is a relief

I have had diabetes for over 35 years and I’ve tried most of the insulin pumps on the market. I have felt a little burned out recently and when I found out about the iLet and how it makes 100% of the insulin dosing decisions for me, I decided I needed to give it a try. This is a game changer for me. Over the last two weeks I’ve been over 80% time in range and have had far less low blood sugars than I have in the past. The iLet app is great. since my desire was to not have to fiddle with my pump as often, the app now allows me to see what my pump is delivering and what my trends are without even looking at my device. It mirrors everything I wanna see. Now I just wish they would come out with a way to announce a meal on the ILET app. Please please please.

Not sure about some of the bad experiences I’m reading about on here…

My a1c has been low to mid 6’s since I can remember. I’ve always just been on shots. I never wanted to use a pump bc of all the hassle and my numbers were always good. I tried iLet bc I was frustrated with my “rage bolusing” and I was always fighting lows after fighting highs.

The ilet hasn’t changed my A1c’s (6.0-6.6 since starting in sept 2023), but it’s allowed me to “let go” a little and not worry constantly about my glucose levels.

Again, this is the only pump I’ve ever wanted to try bc it looked so easy to use with not a lot of work. And I’m really glad I took the leap!

The new app is way better than the old one. I can look at my phone to see if/when I announced and what my level is. Nice features.

Not ready for prime time.

The iLet decides when to give insulin based upon your meal announcements and what it has learned about your habits. In theory, you never have to count carbs or worry about how much insulin to give.

The corollary is that you can’t make any decisions. You can’t decide you need more, or less, insulin. There is no way to make this machine work as a standard insulin pump.

After following the instructions, I found the iLet simply wasn’t doing the job. There were many nights when my blood sugar sat above 300 for hours. But you can’t argue with the iLet - if it “thinks” you have enough insulin, you’re expected to simply wait until your body agrees.

Betabionics doesn’t have a backup plan for what to do if this machine doesn’t work for you. At first they told me to wait and be patient while my glucose levels were dangerously high. Allow the iLet to learn. I’ve had Type-1 diabetes for more than 40 years, and have never been under such poor control as with the iLet.

If pressed enough they’ll advise that you unhook the pump for a while and use syringes or to change your infusion set. But ultimately if the iLet doesn’t work for you, you’re out of luck.

I wanted the iLet to work. I like the concept. But it’s just not ready. It now sits in my desk drawer, unusable. For anyone considering purchasing an iLet, consider a Tandem or Medtronic or Omnipod instead - something with a track record.

When following training guidelines, the iLet algorithms will learn to react over time to the user’s highs and lows, based on meal announcements and glucose levels.
