Sometimes, certain puzzles didn't fit on the screen if you used the Larger Fonts accessibility setting. It's far less fun to solve puzzles that you can't see all of. This release also includes some clean up for By A Vowel and Cryptograms.

Mind Control — the game might just remind you of Mastermind! — got a bit broken this week. I think the game knew I went on vacation, and decided to break then. No worries, though. I came home from vacation, and before I even finished unpacking, I fixed the bug. This release has that Mind Control bug fix!

This version fixes two bugs. You know, I really hate bugs. Bug #1: I'm not perfect. Every once in a while, a puzzle has a typo in it. When this happened with Cryptogram puzzles, if I corrected that typo on the server, the app didn't update fast enough to show that the typo was fixed. That meant a) you probably saw the typo, and b) many, many people (kindly!) wrote to me about the typos. So I'm really solving problems for both of us with this fix. Bug #2: Daylight Saving Times changes in the US made older puzzles crash instead of loading for some users. Date math is hard. This bug was embarrassing. It's fixed forever now.

Sometimes, we just say "bug fixes and improvements," because the fixes themselves are almost embarrassing to share. This is one of those times. Okay, fine, I'll tell you. A persnickety Lexicogs bug that *still* showed the wrong puzzle number sometimes is finally fixed. Let us rejoice together!

This is the pumpkin spice season of app updates. Here's why: It's delightful and harmless, even if you pay no attention to it. By A Vowel interface issues are fixed. Cryptogram timing bugs are squashed. And an occasional numbering issue afflicting Lexicogs is handily addressed. Version 2.0 brought a slew of improvements, including a brand new game — Cryptograms! Version 2.01 brings bug fixes and improvements, including fixes for external keyboard support on Six Appeal, and some interface issues on By A Vowel.

It's the big 2.0 upgrade of Lex.Games! The biggest new feature is a BRAND NEW GAME. Say hello to Cryptograms. If you've never played a cryptogram-style puzzle, you're in for a treat. You'll solve quips and quotes by figuring out a letter cipher — meaning every letter has been replaced with another letter of the alphabet. Crack the code to see the funny one-liner! But a BRAND NEW GAME isn't enough. There's also a slew of both bug fixes AND improvements. I know. I'm excited, too. Among the fixes: FINALLY: External keyboard support for Six Appeal FINALLY: Better iPad layouts for certain games that looked funny on the iPad (looking at you, By A Vowel and Six Appeal) FINALLY: Letter Opener shows you all the word stats you could hope for after your round is over, including the words ONLY YOU found Also, some much-requested needs were addressed: You can reorder the games so that your favorites are on top. (But aren't they all your favorites?! Or in the UK, your favourites?) And everyone's favorite "You did it!" win jingle no longer pauses whatever you're listening to. So you can hear a song of victory WITHOUT interrupting your favorite podcast. All this, and more. Check it out! Some folks, especially cutting edge users, were having issues with By A Vowel. This version makes sure that no one has By A Vowel issues! Other than struggling with those challenging puzzles, of course!

Letter Opener broke! This release fixes it. The people responsible have been punished (for breaking it) and celebrated (for fixing it). All people involved are... me. Sorry about that.

This release fixes an issue with Six Appeal puzzle numbering being off by one from the website. Whoops! Math is hard. Let's play word games! Also: Last release, I added custom icons for paid Lex.Games subscribers. This time, I made those icons better! One of them ("Rebound," named for the beloved podcast I cohost that inspired its look) didn't work. It now does. I consider that better for sure. And many of them had Dark Mode alternatives that were merely "okay." Now they have Dark Mode alternatives that are AWESOME. This release also includes other minor bug fixes and improvements, because that's how we do things here.

A big bug fix for a small problem, and a slew of new custom icons! The small problem: Sometimes, Conlextions puzzles feature emojis. The emojis looked a little small in the app. Now they look MUCH BIGGER — hooray! And, as a perk for Lex.Games paid subscribers, you can now choose from 26 custom icons (each with a Dark Mode variant!) to use with the app. Enjoy!

The three hardest problems in software development are writing release notes and off by one errors. Anyway, there was a bug where certain old puzzles weren't loading, and a worse bug where the Home Screen would show yesterday's crossword instead of today's. Whoops! That's fixed now.

By A Vowel is a fun game, right? Five jumbled-up words, each missing one of the five vowels, all connected by some hidden theme? The problem, as you may well know, is that sometimes, there's a word you just can't crack. But By A Vowel offers no hints! Just a big "Give Up" button. Well, my dear friends, that was ONCE true, but it is no longer the case. With this update to Lex.Games, you can reveal each word individually when playing By a Vowel. Each word reveal adds five minutes to your solve time, but that's better than needing to give up, right? Right. If this update ONLY included By A Vowel hints, that would already be amazing. But guess what, my friends? There's EVEN MORE. I'm talking bug fixes. I'm talking improvements. I'm talking BUG FIXES AND IMPROVEMENTS. That's what's up. Anyway, thanks as always for playing. You can't play every puzzle every day. I get that. Puzzles should be stressful, even for completionists. But the Archive screens for Mini Crosswords and Full-Size Crosswords weren't properly showing which puzzles you'd already solved, and which you hadn't. That could mean a lot of extra tapping as you went through the archives. The people responsible for that bug have been punished. Those same people have also FIXED the bugs in question. Also, those people are me. Lex. The real Lex Friedman, of Lex.Games. We regret the bugs, but they're now fixed, along with other minor issues affecting certain screens of past games.

Sometimes, typing in Six Appeal can feel a little clunky. It should now feel slightly LESS clunky which, which is nice. We're team Less Clunky here at Lex.Games HQ. This release also contains other bug fixes and improvements, but those are top secret.

Paying subscribers get access to a daily full-size crossword. Sometimes, the crossword in the app wasn't matching the one on the web. That crossword cross-contamination made me cross, so I crossed fixing it off the list: They now match again!

Bug fixes AND improvements? In THIS economy?!

Most recently, we added support for iOS 18's dark mode and tinted icons. But this latest update adds another exciting improvement: Crossword puzzle archive links now actually work! Lex.Games subscribers get access to a daily, full-size crossword. Except when you visited the Crossword Archives section, tapping on those crosswords didn't always LOAD those crosswords. That makes the crosswords decidedly less fun: You can't solve what you can't see. I don't think. Anyway, we fixed it now. Rejoice! Updated to embrace iOS 18 with icons supporting Dark Mode and tinting! Lex.Games should look the way you want it to look. Also included in this update are Letter Opener improvements. When you finish a round of Letter Opener, we show you all the possible words you could’ve spelled. But then that button would disappear. Now it doesn’t. That button is now your friend forever. Like me!

Lexicogs. It's a great game, right? Solving crossword-style clues, and all the answers are RIGHT THERE – just jumbled up in cogs. Except, sometimes, some players found that instead of seeing Lexicogs, they just saw a Loading screen. That's decidedly less fun than seeing, you know, the actual game. So this release attempts to fix those Lexicogs issues.
