Great Learning App

NOTE : This review is for the Mac app and the iPad app. I'll note any specific issues for each platform.I home school my 2 boys(6 and 2) and a nephew (8). I've been writing their math practices over and over on a yellow note pad. I'm really tired of writing! It actually becomes taxing to think up different questions all the time! My mind just gets in a trap. MathBoard has saved me from having to do all this writing and wasting paper. The children actually prefer doing the work on the computer / iPad. They get better results as well. Let's face it folks, kids are enamored with technology. If it helps them learn better, I'm all for it. Of course, we still work on actual paper as well.iPad Issues : #1No number keys. The child enters the answer by clicking on up and down arrows. I really don't like that. I'd prefer the chalkboard area had a number pad.# 2 : I didn't immediately see a way to turn off the sound. The app ignores my iPads volume controls.iPad and Mac Issues:#1 At first I didnt' think I could have more than one child's name on the app. It wasn't particularly intuitive that this was possible. However, clicking or tapping on the student's name brings up selection dialog to allow adding or selecting students.Overall, I'm quite happy with this app. If your children need to practice basic to advanced math skills, this is the app to use. It's not overly boring and not an over-to-top game like most of the math practice apps that do little more than prove your child can pop a bubble or pretend to fly a rocket ship.Well done!
MathBoard beat the rest of them

I've just spent about 90 minutes and $10 downloading and trying out apps to help my boys (6 and 9) learn math. Many were just awful. This one is the one that I will keep and use. The problems are clear, the controls are robust, and there's enough history and statistics. I like how I can very carefully tune what will go into a quiz. I like the full screen nature of it. I like how I can have multiple "students", whose scores and histories will be different.I'm a bit of a nut about user interface, and out of all the math apps I tried, this is the ONLY one that allows logical use of the keyboard. On multiple choice questions, you can press "a" to answer "a". On fill-in-the-blank questions, you can type in "27" and hit enter. This is really valuable. Very few math apps allow ANY use of the keyboard at all. Many of their mouse interfaces are awful. This app gets it right. If I have any criticisms, they're mild. The settings are global to the whole app, not per-student. One of my boys is doing addition, the other is doing multiplication. I have to change settings each time one of them sits down. Some apps have a game-like earning mechanism. Over time the student gets some points, tokens, etc. for doing lots of problems. I like this aspect in some games because I see my boys respond to it. They want to earn high scores and advancements. Likewise, I think it's cool to have benchmarks and/or high-water marks in the stats. Things like "your average time" or "your best time" or "your best score" etc. Letting them compete against their personal best is good. This game doesn't include those, but it does include the main thing that I need most: math. And it gets the interface totally right.
Using it for homeschooling kids

This program is great. I downloaded the free addition version to check it out as the price for the full version seemed a bit high. After using the free version I picked up the full version right away. I am a stay at home dad and am homeschooling my son (5) and daughter (4). I have purchased a few retail software programs but found they didn't provide for the customization that this one does. Some of the retail programs are filled with so much fluff that it's hard to actually GET to the actual problems. I believe the kids benefit from the direct simplicity of reviewing problem after problem. Also **thumbs up** to the newest version that allows for student profiles and saved settings, this is a BIG DEAL! Thanks.
Elegant and useful

I have been using this developer's MathFlash on my iPhone for two years. But MathBoard is the next level. Very nice design in chalkbord style. Easy to set up and use. I use it every day. I look forward to the next app by the developer. Perhaps one for algebra?
