miniVAN Touch is a mobile canvassing application that integrates with websites provided by NGP VAN. The miniVAN system allows users to export canvassing lists from VAN onto an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. Canvassers can then enter data into their device as they talk to people on their list. When the canvassers connect their device to the Internet over a wireless or cellular network, they can upload their data back to the VAN with the touch of a button. Administrative users on the VAN can then review the data and apply it to the database in one quick step.
Canvassing with miniVAN allows NGP VAN clients to spend more time and resources on actually contacting people instead of on data entry. What’s more, it virtually eliminates the lag time between collecting canvass results and putting that data to work.
MiniVAN is now translated to Spanish for canvassers who have set their device language to Spanish. Keep in mind that while we provide translation for hard-coded text in MiniVAN, you will need to provide translations for Scripts, Activist Codes, and Survey Questions when you create or edit them in the CRM.

Now you can search for and add voters to your list while knocking doors. When you encounter a voter not on your list you’ll be able to search the voter file for the person you are talking to, add them to your list, and record you interactions. This is only available for Voter File lists.

Good but could be improved
Destroyers my phone battery if location settings is on but makes canvassing a hell of a lot more efficient and streamlined access to data for campaigns. Could make it less of a battery killer and improve mapping data since some homes are harder to find if they don’t fit the norm but there isn’t any better option. Canvassing is the top determiner of election results easily. Suggestion: allow user to store more than 1 list at a time so they can switch between them. Also make less clicking needed to answer for multiple household members by default especially when usually only one responds if at all.
It works, if you can work around the bugs
When using the “optimize my route” option (which you’ll definitely want to, do you can cover addresses efficiently), the app randomly loses the optimized sort order without provocation. If you don’t know this ahead of time, you can wind up walking in circles all day, returning to streets you thought you were finished with, and just basically wasting time and doing a lot of unnecessary walking. You going to have to constantly be on the lookout for the re-appearance of the “optimize my route” button, and push many, many times to maintain an efficient route.
I have used this app several times; way better than paper. Easy to use, and I’m 68. I would like a few bells and whistles for encouragement. Halfway through send a message, like “Congratulations. Halfway there. Keep going.” When 10 houses from done, let user know in case thinking of giving up. At the end some balloons or fireworks or stars. With paper you can see your progress and how much is left. With this you have no idea.
