A good start, but

The UI is clean and I’m fond of the update feed, but several key features are very lacking. The app is supposed to be a substitute for using MAL in a browser, but many basic things like viewing character pages or friends’ profiles moves you from the app onto your browser to complete the action. It’s also impossible to view your list with filters like you can on the website, which is a major inconvenience for someone like me with a long list. The search bar is very limited, only allowing you to search for anime titles and not people, users, or manga, and speaking of manga, the manga list is entirely absent from this app so far.

Overall, the app is plagued with inconveniences that makes it very frustrating to try to use. At this point, it is certainly no substitute for the MAL website, but if some of these problems can be addressed this skeleton of an app has a lot of potential.

Thank you for your extensive review of the app.
"Skeleton" is apt, but we are considering this as more of a "base" that we can build up from.
Core, necessary features like list sorts/filters and manga are high on our priority list because we know how important these functions are.
We're glad that you seem to like the UI so far as this is one thing we were hoping to understand by launching early.
Hopefully you'll continue to find the app pleasing to use as more and more features are added.

Glad to have but needs some adjustments

The app has been a long time coming and so I am grateful to have it, but I find I still use the website more because the app needs work. One of the major let downs for me is that the “add to list” and “favorite” buttons are not immediately visible like on the website and other 3rd party apps. Sadly you have to click a button and wait for the screen to load, albeit a quick load, just to figure out if it’s already on your list or what episode you stopped at. It seems to me that there is also no advanced search page. You also can’t tell if an anime is on your “plan to watch” list or if you just haven’t added it to anything since it automatically highlights “plan to watch” if you haven’t watched it.

This last bit is more of personal preference than an actual issue. I think the app should at least have the option of different views. As it is now it seems like everything is so zoomed in only a few things can fit on the screen. I feel like the app should be made to mirror the mobile version of the website just a little more or at least have the option to change it to look a bit more like it.

Thanks for trying out the official app. We're just in the first phase of implementation, so we agree with the mobile web will have more features. Also, many minor polishes are still needed to make the app feel more sleek. While we hope you'll check back as we continue developing, we're glad to know you've already found the way you enjoy.

A Great Start!

Before this wonderful first party app was released, I used a third party app that synced with my MyAnimeList account. That app worked fine, but eventually it stopped working properly due to issues with the API (or lack thereof, I can’t remember what the issue was exactly). After that third party app stopped working, I used a rather convoluted workaround that involved using the AniList app, then using a Chrome extension to sync my AniList account to MAL and automatically update my MAL account. MAL is my favorite anime and manga database, so I’m sticking with it no matter what.

Then when I heard that MAL was working on a first party app, I was ecstatic. The day finally came when 1.0 was released, and it’s a fantastic start. Kudos to the devs for making such a clean, pleasing, and easy-to-use UI. Having used the app for several weeks now, I have no complaints, because the features that I want that aren’t here yet, are features I know that the devs are dilligently working on. I’m excited to see this app grow more and more in excellence. Keep up the great work devs!

Thank you for your warm message. Your words are very encouraging for everyone involved in the development of this app. I hope you continue to enjoy MAL!
