ReTab for Safari 4+

Jump or cycle thru recent tabs

Description

Cmd+E to jump between the most recent tabs, Cmd+G to cycle through recent tabs history, Cmd+Shift+G to cycle backwards, and Close Tab also jumps to the most recent tab (toggleable).

ReTab is simple & light, which means it uses minimum memory and won't crash - sounds basic, right? But we found other similar plugins for Safari don't even meet these! We tried the others, but one doesn't work with the latest macOS, and the other causes several crashes every day - we contacted the developer who couldn't figure out the cause, thus decided to make ReTab by ourselves, for ourselves. We love it and hope you do too!

Why Cmd+E & Cmd+G as the default keyboard shortcuts? They're easy to hit with your left hand, and most other keys are already taken. Plus, Cmd+E is rarely used for disk ejection or “Use Selection to Find,” and Cmd+G is for "Find Again" so we think they're the perfect choices.

Want it on iPad too? ReTab is the only available extension for iOS & iPadOS (because others don't use the latest tech), and it's bundled together with the macOS version :]

Works as intended but could be better

On the plus side this works reliably for me compared to TabBack.

However it’d be nice if I could see a visual preview of my previous tabs, like Firefox / Arc do when ctrl-tabbing (or even TabBack’s lackluster list of page titles is better than nothing).

Also like other reviews it’d be nice if I could set a custom shortcut, not sure why this isn’t possible with this extension given TabBack lets you. Is it because TabBack runs in the background perhaps.

Great extension but can’t customize keyboard shortcut

Being able to easily switch to the last used browser tab is super useful and this extension does that as promised.

However I’m not able to customize the keyboard shortcut as described in the settings - only the default Cmd+E one works. (MacOS Sequoia 15.2)

Developer Response ,

Thanks for the feedback Tetsuwan! Regarding customized shortcuts, currently Safari is lacking the standard support and hopefully it will add support to change extension shortcut directly like other browsers do (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Add-ons/WebExtensions/manifest.json/commands).

macOS allows customizing shortcuts but it's currently not working for Safari extensions in general, and we raised a bug report and Apple acknowledged it but hasn't promised when it would be fixed yet.

Poor design

One common workflow I have is cycling through three tabs. Retab doesn’t do this. cmd+e only does two tabs, and cmd+g doesn’t update the tab order afterward, so if I use cmd+g then cmd+g again it doesn’t take me back to where I was.

It’s pretty bold to charge money for an incomplete product like this. It doesn’t serve common use cases due to poor design, and it doesn’t let you change the shortcut. I’m pretty sure it’s possible to override ctrl+tab too, correct me if I’m wrong.

Make this free and I’ll give it four stars. Better yet, make it open source. Then someone, maybe me, will fix these flaws, and then I’ll give it five stars.

Thanks for the feedback and let's get things clarified so we can improve it! So say you go to tab A > B > C, then you said cmd+g then cmd+g and where do you want it to land? Currently it'd go from C to B, then B to A; if you want go back to B again you can do cmd+shift+g; if you want to go C > B > C then you can do either cmd+e twice, or cmd+g then cmd+shift+g. Let us know your expected behavior. You can also email to info@lycheeisle.com.
