Dr David Spiegel, Associate Chair of Psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine, is a psychiatrist who has taught more than 7,000 people how to better manage their minds and bodies using hypnosis. David is also Reveri's Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer, bringing more than 45 years of clinical and research experience studying stress, pain, sleep, and hypnosis. He has written thirteen books, 404 scientific journal articles, and 170 book chapters. He was educated at Harvard and Yale and now teaches at Stanford. WHAT IS SELF-HYPNOSIS?

Many people fear that hypnosis is a loss of control. In reality, hypnosis is a means of increasing your control over your mind and body. Our minds are powerful tools, and most of us can learn how to use them more effectively. Hypnosis gives us a pathway to alter the relationship between mind and body.

more effective than meditation

I’ve tried many different meditation apps to help me get back to sleep at night without much success until I found Reveri. I fall asleep within minutes and wake up feeling so refreshed after doing the sleep exercise. $15 a month seemed a bit steep, especially after having a comparably good version of the app for free, but the results are undeniable. Although I don’t use the other exercises, having so much content available at a fraction of the going rate of one hypnotherapy session (~$300), puts the extreme value of this app in context. Thankful to have found this app, highly recommend

Feels rushed, app unresponsive

I have used several guided hypnosis tapes over the years. This doesn’t seem more effective than the other ones, many of which are cost less to access. The guidance in this one is hurried. He’s like “Imagine this. Do you have it? Good.” and then goes on to the next instruction. It takes a little longer than that to get into the zone! Also I have consistently experienced the app to be unresponsive to the verbal cue “okay” when that is what is requested. It takes me out of the hypnosis every time. That doesn’t seem to happen with the “yes”/“no” cues. I can’t imagine my voice is less understandable when I say “okay”.
I wouldn’t pay for a long subscription. There aren’t enough hypnosis tracks, they are much too short, and they aren’t noticeably different from the good stuff on Insight Timer. Also kind of irritating that in plugging this app on some podcasts Dr. Huberman referred to the cost as nominal. I suppose on a Stanford neurologist’s salary it is, but the vast majority of people in this country make under 50k. “Nominal” is relative, and his salary os not relatable.

Helpful

I truly appreciate Dr. Spiegel sharing his passion and expertise. I originally gave the app low marks but as I have practiced his techniques more, I now understand how valuable the app is. In addition to using the resources on the app I find myself expanding the sessions with my own guidance and suggestions or just using the technique he teaches without guidance from the app at times. I do not particularly like the voice recognition and interaction, I find it distracting as is the rating system. However overall I think this is a very important app for mental health and well- being.

Thanks very much for sharing your feedback, we depend on it to continually improve the Reveri experience. Rest assured, we are a very small team putting maximum effort to make Reveri the best it can be, with a long roadmap of updates planned for the months ahead. We will be adding to the Practice experience, including an update to Improve Sleep coming in March.

For what it's worth, the practice of self-hypnosis should be viewed very differently than the consumption of "content." You can benefit from repeating the same Reveri Practice over and over. Mastery of self-hypnosis does not require a long list of varied sessions. Indeed too much variety of experience may distract from the goal. Instead, mastery of self-hypnosis depends on the ease with which you can train yourself to enter the hypnotic state and use it to solve problems.
