Description

JST School of Weaving is a series of instructional lessons where weavers learn at their own
pace to weave on 4-shaft looms and continue on their weaving journey with renowned
instructor and designer Jane Stafford.

Each lesson demonstrates step by step instructions and will inspire weavers to design and
create the best possible cloth they can – to care about graphic, colour, hand, and drape –
from beginners wondering where to start, to experienced production weavers searching for
new horizons.

FEATURES
-All previously aired Seasons
-New episode released every 6 weeks
-Access to downloadable PDF pattern drafts
-Be able to participate in an engaging weaving community

Season 1 - The Fundamentals of Weaving
All the fundamentals of weaving. Warping, various methods of dressing the loom, great
weaving technique, project planning, understanding sett, information about different types of
looms and yarns, weaving with difficult yarns like mohair, fulling and finishing.

Season 2 - Colour & Weave
Laying the foundations of colour and design. The format is simple and easy, encouraging
original design and making it accessible and fun. Concepts regarding colour theory, graphic,
division of space and the architecture of design are laid down in a way that allows weavers to
bring their ideas to reality.

Season 3 - Pushing the Boundaries of Plain Weave
We take an in-depth look at Plain Weave. We get familiar with our reed: exploring denting;
cramming and denting; weft-faced; warp-faced; double weave; collapse weave and
supplementary warp.

Season 4 - Twills on Four
We explore threadings, tie-ups, treadlings, colour and weave, big threadings, little threadings,
Point Twill, Twill and Basket Weave, Shadow Weave, Weft Faced Twills and end up
harnessing the power of 4 shaft looms in relation to the twill weave structure.

Season 5 - Laces
We tackle Laces with Canvas Weave, Huck, Huck with Colour and Weave effects, Bronson
Spot, Atwater Bronson Lace, Blended Lace and how we can get Lace and Twills all in one
piece. But we first start the year with Turned Twill.

Season 6 - Units, Blocks and Profiles
Units, Blocks and Profiles are the 3 words that we dance around in Season 6. We study a few
new structures (well, actually very old structures) and see how we can use everything we’ve
learned about design in fresh new ways.

Season 7 - An Overlay of Colour and Weave and Texture on Units and Block Structures
Season 7 builds on all previous years with special emphasis on the Colour and Weave gamp
we did in S2 E4. We take those colour and weave sequences and overlay them onto units
and blocks for Overshot, Crackle, Halvdrall, Turned Taquette, Summer & Winter, M’s & O’s
and Monk’s Belt. We also start the season with one more 8-shaft Turned Twill with colour &
weave.

Season 8 - Double The Fun
In Season 8, we delve further into M’s & O’s and Huck, the Powell method of drafting Shadow
Weave, introduction to Deflected Double Weave, Block Double Weave, and Double Faced
Twills. We’ll be doubling our fun by looking at structures on 4 and 8 shafts.

Jane is the best fiber arts teacher I have ever had!

Jane’s method of teaching is the best I’ve ever had the pleasure to experience — online or in person. I love the way she always takes the time to carefully and thoroughly explain the theory behind every weaving technique and structure that she teaches. Her explanations are detailed and logical in their order of presentation — and her demonstrations at the loom are presented very clearly. An added bonus is her sense of humor and obvious love of the weaving process and the fabric she produces. I also believe that the Jane Stafford School of Weaving is the best value available today. To be able to get so many hours of high quality instruction, detailed lesson printouts and patterns, and on-line chat and assistance for such a reasonable charge is truly remarkable! I have completed the first five seasons, am currently enjoying season six, and hope to continue as long as Jane is teaching! (I frequently review past lessons — another plus for membership.) I also enjoy the access to beautiful yarns and kits. I recommend the JST School of Weaving to all of my fellow weavers, both new and experienced.

Great learning tool for ADD

For someone that struggles in most classroom settings and with ADD, Jane Stafford’s School of Weaving video subscription format is the easiest, most user friendly AND AFFORDABLE tool to learning how to weave. I would be taking expensive workshops repeatedly (if I can find them at all) and come away with gaps in my understanding and more questions than answers. She knows and shares so much! With School of Weaving, I can go back and review video as much as I need and whenever I want, or browse and submit topics for questions in the community forum! She has you covered where forms, patterns and diagrams come to play with printable downloads included. This is perfect for my ADD because I struggle between verbal instruction-to-practice retention and attention. I can take time to commit things to muscle and memory. Thank you so much!

Jane is the BEST teacher!

I’ve only been weaving about three years. I know a bit, but have so much more to learn. Jane has shown me simpler more effective ways to do things I know how to do, as well as explain very clearly things I didn’t know. Her lessons on sett were extraordinary! I had heard about sett and knew what was meant by sett, but I had NO idea about the effect changing sett had on fabric.

Jane is a master in her trade, and she knows how articulate her knowledge in a clear and accessible manner. She imparts her knowledge in a way that allows you the room to make it your own. I have taken lessons with a number of teachers and with several online schools, Jane is by far and away the best.
