Senode is an innovative music composition app based on finite state machines. It works like a modular step sequencer with polyphonic steps and probabilistic choices between routes, which makes it perfect for algorithmic composition. In addition, all sequencer actions are MIDI bindable, so the steps can controlled in real time from drums, sensors or other apps – a real live-performance instrument.

CREATE COMPLEX SEQUENCES WITH RANDOMIZATION
The core of Senode is a graph of Nodes connected by Edges. You decide if it behaves like a simple vending machine or a complex pinball game. Each Node triggers a sound when activated, while Edges determine the direction of travel. Instruments are controlled by Emitters which send their Tokens onto the graph. That means, you can compose a generative music piece for a whole orchestra using the graph notation and a couple of Emitters! It gets more interesting if you add random directions or emit multiple Tokens at different time positions.
GRAPHICAL MULTI-TOUCH INTERFACE
You can compose and perform your music live using the intuitive multi-touch interface. The on-screen keyboard helps you to visualize and edit notes assigned to the currently selected Node. Drag and connect Nodes with multiple fingers. Activate a sequence by sending Tokens onto the graph. Use your fingers to step through sequences manually or tap the master clock. All synth parameters are accessible from the main panel with multi-touch as well.
Each Emitter contains a simple but powerful subtractive synthesizer with main OSC (sine, saw, square), sub OSC (sine), 1-pole lowpass filter, stereo reverb and ADSR envelope. Try the demo patches to get inspired!
MIDI CONTROL AND STEP RECORDING
Use the step record function to create new nodes on the fly, either from single notes or with chord detection. Use a drum kit, wearable sensors or any other MIDI device to control the steps of Senode. Enjoy the unique experience of being your own master clock!
CONTROL MUSIC APPS AND EXTERNAL DEVICES
Senode is the perfect sequencer for all MIDI-capable apps. Play in sync with other apps using Ableton Link. If you connect a MIDI interface, you can even control your hardware synths with the app.
Senode is made for live music performance. There are no default "beats" or "bars" and all actions are performed in real time. However, Tokens can be quantized to a master clock (16th resolution) and support catch-up, which means you can hit all functions like a drummer "on the spot" and stay in sync, even if you're too early or a little late. By the way, the really cool stuff will happen if you break free from 4/4 bar schemes, start your sequences on off-beat timings or create crazy polyrhythmic cycles...

Update 1.0.2 promptly resolved my MIDI issue❣️
Senode crashes now trying to set MIDI connections on my iPad Pro 1st generation on iOS 10.3. Frequently Senode now will not always allow turning MIDI connection on or off. Every time I try to, Senode crashes.
The potential of ‘non-linear’ sequencing with Senode is great! It took me the better part of an hour start to ‘think Senode’. What is beautiful about Senode is that each ‘emitter’ family (and it’s associated nodes (notes)) can be a musical gem and yet only be part of a ‘larger’ musical gem.
What could be cool is to have a way to be able to mute/unmute emitters to a defined user pattern (playing around with different combinations of emitters could produce some cool sequences.) It would also be nice to be able to solo an emitter. Right now I have no way to record the output of both Senode, as well as the synth/s I’m using Senode to control at this point. I’ve been in contact with the developer (excellent response time I might add), and they are planning to add Ableton Link and AUv3 and Audiobus and IAA might not be required anymore if we have AUv3.
Right now I am using Senode as a massive harmonics source that I’m remodulating and / or crushing Senode’s MIDI output using both EGSY01 and Animoog mixed using AUM and playing/mixing in a prerecorded track of the same piece. I am using Master FX on EGSY01’s input and AltiSpace on the recording’s playback. Awesome stuff❣️

Too simple to use to be this powerful. Bravo! Wish list in order: 1. Node edges to multiple nodes needs an “and/parallel/always” in addition to the random “or”. This would enable true polyphony for linear sets of manually triggered nodes. E.g branch a series of nodes to sustain a note or chord through multiple ticks while the other branch triggers on every tick. 2. Ability to clone emitters and nodes or set default properties for each. This would be a great convenience. 3. Trigger emitters directly from nodes. With both “and” and “or” options could accomplish #1 above and more.
This is a gem, highly versatile, well-designed, much deeper than you might think at first. Some small room for growth of features, but really very robust as is. Nothing quite like it on iPad ("Nodal" on computer is very similar).
