Getting Close To Greatness

A long overdue update finally hit, and I don’t have to keep looking at Easter bunnies in the middle of July. An app like this needs frequent updates, because one can quickly work through exercises. If the developers show more commitment to this app, and get this app using at least half the potential of the Apple Pencil, I’ll give it 5 stars. It seemed like they fell asleep at the wheel, but the latest update should keep everyone busy for a while. And adding top notch artists like Robert Marzullo is a great start towards greatness. Developers, please don’t make us wait another four months. You’ve got a good thing going now.

On another note, I was disappointed to see they have a version of this app for $20. In a world where consumers are becoming more wary of “standard” and “deluxe” versions of apps and even more so with subscription pricing, I don’t think their “Academy” version is going to fly. Time will tell. But that app appears to be where they are focusing the bulk of their time on, especially with respect to getting more out of the Apple Pencil. They should have stuck to one app and developed it fully with in-app purchases instead of crippling one app in favor of the other.

Hello and thank you for your detailed review :) From an outsiders perspective I can see where you are coming from. Please let me share from an insiders perspective :) Also please email me anytime marty@shadowdrawapp.com There I can share things that I may not be able to share here as my review may not get approved ;)

-Yes the update did take a while. It was because we needed to change some processes of how we got art from hardworking artists.
-We are 100% committed to the app. We are a team of 2 with some more help on the sides. We really love ShadowDraw and want to bring on more team and we are a small business. We will continue to grow. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow. Believe in us and give your passionate reviews and share ShadowDraw and we will grow. I know it may seem on the outside that we feel asleep at the wheel but we have not. My cofounder barely sleeps ;). I will do my best to make sure you don't feel that way again :)

The ShadowDraw Academy app is designed for Schools and the Education market. We can't have the same art, we can't have the same features. We had to develop a whole new app that meets the important rules for teachers and students and child safety. We were encouraged to get this new app out in time for the upcoming fall school year. We are not allowed to have in app purchases with School apps. There are a lot of things we can and can't do but we still want to be able to pay our hardworking artists including Robert Marzullo and David Drazil and all of our others so we do work hard on a business model that works for you, the artists and ShadowDraw. You are not a teacher or a student so you only need to get ShadowDraw - Learn How to Draw. You never have to worry about looking for 2 different apps from us. Also we had to change the name from just ShadowDraw because we learned we would never show up in the search for "how to draw" otherwise :(

From this moment forward we are focused on both ShadowDraw apps because we care about students and teachers and we also care about you and other creative people who are not in school. Please tell me what you think about my reply and also email me :)

Has potential

The app is a good start, and can be fun, especially with more artists added. I have two suggestions to make it more useful. First, when starting a new drawing, it is imperative to have a faint outline of the actual finished drawing in the background. I just spent like 10 minutes drawing the squirrel, except for most of it, I was just scribbling circles and lines without knowing how they related to the final product. To learn to sketch, I need to know how to look at an image and break it down into those lines and circles. Just blindly scribbling doesn’t help a lot. Also, with the more complex drawings, at times, the artist’s next line is a dot somewhere on the page of scribbles and I can’t find where to make the next line, so I have to just randomly draw until I find out where the dot was, as the drawing won’t continue until you match the artists lines.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for your suggestions and review. We have been thinking about the ideal way to show not just a finished drawing, but a preview of the next steps. Right now we have a cool preview mode that will reveal each new step moving forward. If you press and hold on the circle on the top right you will see what the artist created come to life. Please tell me what you think of that feature by emailing me at support@shadowdrawapp.com

Also we have added a new Skip a step feature in the 1.3 update. Whenever you see a little dot or you can’t find the next step and you want to go your own way, simply tap the screen with 3 fingers at the same time and you will skip forward one step. Please try this in the update and tell me what you think.

So far so good!

Haven’t completed too many drawings yet but needed to give kudos, I had been looking for an app almost exactly like this! As for the reviewer complaining that this isn’t how you learn to draw, speak for yourself. There are plenty of different ways to learn how to draw, and ultimately muscle-memory is a big factor as well, and I like that they guide you step-by-step how another animator would draw, it’s a perfectly suitable way to learn to draw (and yes, I’ve taken sketch courses before, many many many years ago, hence why I was looking for an app like this).

So far can’t really say anything negative, it works perfectly smooth; the user interface could use some livening up but that’s just cosmetic junk, it works and is easy to navigate and use.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for your kind review :) We are a small humble team and are going to continue to refine the ShadowDrawing™ experience as well as add new features, bug fixes and we will "liven" up the user interface. Our main focus has been working to "Shadow" what the original artist has drawn so that other creative people can discover their process. Thank you.
