Description

Stratus Insight is a full electronic flight bag (EFB) suite for pilots that includes AHRS with synthetic vision, TAWS, VFR sectional maps, IFR low/high charts, and geo-referenced approach plates.

More than an EFB, Stratus Insight also offers:

Internet Traffic
Follow along and monitor ADS-B traffic from the ground. Enable this overlay and watch as traffic is shown in real-time on the map.

Radio Transcription & Playback
Stratus Insight boasts a custom-built speech recognition system inside the app. When paired with a Stratus Audio Cable, the ATC Radio Transcription feature works similar to visual voicemail. ATC communications are converted into text, providing a helpful visual assist for referencing previous audio clips. This enables pilots to receive a clearance, ATIS, or other important ATC communications without needing to write them down

Vertical Weather Profile
The Vertical Weather Profile previews your route in the vertical slice from departure to destination, up to eight days out, so you can see the conditions you’ll encounter based on your departure time, aircraft speed, and each intermediate airport.

Smart Flight Plan
If a TFR or changes in weather force you to take an alternate route, the Smart Flight Plan tool considers things like fuel stops and day/night currency.

Radar Forecast
Radar Forecast provides long-term weather radar simulations up to three days out, and you can fast forward your weather radar in one-hour increments.

Stratus Audio Cable
The Stratus Audio Cable (available to purchase for $49.99 from the Appareo web store) is needed to enable the radio transcription and playback feature.

Seamless Integration with Stratus
The app supports all generations of Stratus receivers, and the user experience is seamless. Stratus receivers provide WAAS GPS, AHRS, in-flight weather, and ADS-B traffic.

Apple Watch
Uses HealthKit to detect hypoxia-like symptoms for pilot health monitoring including nearby airport weather watch faces and weather radar on watch.

Favorites lacking, storage hog

I’ve tried quite a few flight apps, most called EFBs despite the fact that most are far from an “EFB”. I like this one but it is a compromise because it lacks the ability to edit the favorites list or a method to save for a long term, a plan that one uses frequently. It is also not possible to edit a temporarily saved “favorite”, you have to name it something else. The favorites list as is, has little to no value to me.

More than 20 gig, yes, more than 20 gig of storage, how can that be?

Another problem I encountered is that after creating an IFR flight plan, if you try to edit airways after the fact, it draws airway lines all over the place which the only way to fix is to start over. I found myself going back to skyvector to create and file my flight plans because I know they will be correct that way.

Documentation is really poor, and that is a problem in itself.

I really like the price as it is reasonable, but improvements need to be made. I’m going to continue using this app as I watch for these changes. Hopefully I can edit this review as changes are made.

I uninstalled this app because it is not working for me, before the trial ended, yet I was still charge the annual fee. I would like refund.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for trying insight. We do have the ability to both save and recall flight plans, finding this functionality can be a little tricky at first. Please contact us at support@appareo.com and we would be happy to help walk you through this.

The storage space seems a little high. We recommend deleting the app entirely then reinstalling and downloading what you need. If you had a previous version around there may be a few database files still hanging around on the filesystem.

It sounds like you had some issues with airway routing. The app tries to detect which direction you are going on your airway based on what you enter. It might be easier to enter the entire route in the search box instead of the FPL editor tool, this may help you. If you have a series of waypoints you enter that show up wrong please contact support as this may be a bug.

Outstanding for a CFI/CFII/MEI/Professional Pilot

As a 1200+ hr CFI/MEI/CFII I highly recommend this to my students as I think it’s phenomenal. I’d used foreflight for a long time (mostly because it’s popular) and it’s what my employer wanted us to use... Then flight plan go. But aerovie is on a whole other level and is amazing as a personal tool and as a teaching tool. Awesome weather info, easy to use, reliable interface in the cockpit, ability to show multiple METAR qualities on the map for airports (which foreflight CAN NOT do!), tons of advanced layers you can load on the map for weather - for teaching, research, or getting a more in-depth understanding of the atmosphere you’re going to face... These really help provide a more in-depth look at the weather as well as your flight plan. All for a very affordable price I think.

One thing I wish were changed however... when clicking on AIRMETs (Zulu tango Sierra etc) it shows the applicable altitude but I still want to see the RAW ORIGINAL AIRMET information in the little white box. The original airmet text information. Also when looking at the complete standard briefing.... the way the winds/temperatures aloft text is presented it kind of runs together and is hard to read? Is there any way to fix this? I’m running a 12.9 inch iPad Pro (on the ground only!) and it’s still hard to see/decipher sometimes.

Was great

I'd give it five stars, however, the app keeps closing on me whenever I try to view a route from a zoomed out view. Seems to be a relatively recent issue too, possible bug that can hopefully be fixed with an update. Also, weather illustrations could be better. Looking at a prog chart to get an idea for upcoming weather is like looking at a pixelated outdated chart, same with icing illustration on the overlay menu. It's competitive with foreflight to an extent. One great feature that could make Aerovie really stand out is incorporating the option to select "ATC Preferred routes" when it comes to IFR flying much like foreflight does, working on weather overlay graphics/visuals, and possibly incorporating the ability to draw text on the plates or charts as reminders, outlining taxi routes on an airport diagram, or circling important portions of an approach/DP plate. EDIT: Looks like there was an update available and I did not notice it until after sending this - I'll give it five stars due to the fact that the developer seems to have caught this bug relatively quick! For what it's worth, the app is great, just my .02 on what I think could be improved upon. Merely constructive criticism, nothing more :)
