Don_iPad ,

TextMaker is awesome!

I am a big fan of SoftMaker Office Professional 2021 on my iMacs. Simply put, TextMaker is an excellent word processor. Ditto for their iOS version. It makes going from working on your iMac or macBook to your iPad pretty seamless. The free iOS version of TextMaker is fine if you don’t need to print or convert documents to PDF. And even then, you can create a document in TextMaker on your iPad and pass it to your iMac or MacBook and print it that way. For me, the annual fee is a fair price for the convenience of printing without extra steps. What can I say? Every software developer and their Aunt Mable wants a steady cash flow, hence subscription software abounds. I’m hoping the fine folks at SoftMaker will eventually offer a “buy it once and own it” iOS option in the future. Either way, the bottom line is this: if you want MS Word on your iPad or iPhone without buying into the whole Microsoft Office 365 environment, look no further. And yes, I wrote and spellchecked this on TextMaker on my iPad. Duh. :) Hope my comments are helpful.

Blast of the past…

I used Office 2003 and later 2010 for decades, being very happen with the old style ribbon menu across the top. Then Microsoft decided that, even tho nothing was broken, to complete complexify the Office menu ribbon. It is insanely complicated, so that TextEdit has returned to a bit of menu sanity is very satisfying.

Correct

Thanks to Softmaker for their response. I was able to find in the app a way to make TextMaker a nice, menu-driven application resembling their excellent desktop version. My whines now are limited to these:

-- There's peculiar behavior among embedded links, where a link is not just the linked text but all the text to the end of the paragraph when the document is opened in any other word processor.

-- The app behaves unexpectedly when minimized, keeping the document but closing it and opening to a blank screen when maximized again. Strange, irritating, but seemingly nondestructive.

-- The app behaves unpredictably when saving an edited document, sometimes simply saving it as expected but sometimes invoking the whole "save as" dialogue instead.

Wishlist item: it would be nice if there were keystroke combinations to perform common functions, especially when a hardware keyboard is used, though I understand that this might be difficult or impossible.

Another wishlist item: it would be nice to be able to just buy the thing. I'd happily pay even a fairly high purchase price, but I recoil at software rental.

Developer Response ,

TextMaker can be used with a smartphone user interface, a ribbon-based user interface for tablets and classic menus. I think you should try out the user interfaces and choose the one that best matches your working style. If you want something really easy, the smartphone user interface looks like the best choice.
