TouchArcade Game of the Week! (4/24/20)

The Greater Good is a stylized, throwback, turn-based RPG featuring unique graphics and an original, explosive soundtrack (from electronic producer EnrightBeats). Meet hilarious friends and make not-so hilarious enemies as you traverse a fully-realized, handcrafted world. Created entirely by one person out of love for classic turn-based RPGs.

Machines are on the rise while magic is all but forgotten. Few even remember the destruction of the Elemental Tree so many years ago. Team up with a band of unlikely heroes as you rediscover this world's past and fight to save its future.

What a guy, what a game!

The developer saw my suggestion of his game on the iOS subreddit and offered me a free copy via DM. I had not purchased it at that point, but was planning on doing so once I cleared some game backlog. I know it’s only $3.99 but I stand by and support developers who handle themselves like Sam does. If he does send me a free copy of The Greater Good, I’ll end up gifting it to someone on the iOS subreddit.

After playing for about an hour, I’m really enjoying the game. I’ve found some secrets, NPCs are hilarious and the music is great. At face value, the art style seems simplistic but it’s actually beautifully drawn with moments that are simply captivating. I am getting major Final Fantasy 7 vibes here, both music and art style.

There’s a skill system that leads to a satisfying build up, paired with the turn based combat. You’ll find equipment such as weapons, armor and rings. You can talk to various NPCs scattered about with their own bits of information to share. I’ve found treasure chests both on the beaten path as well as tucked away on hard to reach platforms or behind what appears to be a hidden wall or dead end. I’ve run into a merchant selling goods and I even heard rumor of a big nasty boss who’s taken up residence inside the local cave. Exciting!

So far, this game is the total RPG package.

What a great little game!

First off, I love the art.
And what really gives it punch is the diverse in-game cutscenes that use basic animations combined with excellent comedic timing and scripting to leverage it to full effect.
This game has a pleasing loop, where the upgrades are meaningful, and it’s not at all grind-ey. The only part that feels like it goes on a little long is the desert, and that’s done for effect. You’re crossing a d***ned desert, after all.
It’s short, but meaty. The writing is good. The secret finds are rewarding. The scaling is just right, which is surprising given that the difficulty doesn’t scale dynamically.
A lot of love went into this game. Enjoy it!

I like it so far, but ran into a pretty big (and specific) bug. Also, slight spoiler.

I’m liking it so far and I like the humor as well, however I’ve run into a pretty big bug.

Slight spoiler ahead:

I was maybe halfway into the cave when I tried to interact with a chest and got ambushed and then killed by a giant mama spider (I was totally unprepared for it, so, dying to it is all on me), I reloaded the save from just before entering the cave and the cutscene that was supposed to play, didn’t. I couldn’t interact with anything and had to do an iPad reboot (in order to restart the app) in order to fix it. Also, I had apparently successfully opened the chest because I got the item from it and the item received text continued into the loaded save, don’t know if that had anything to do with it.

Can I make a suggestion for more save points? Would be nice if I didn’t have to go through half (I think, don’t know how close to next save point I was) of that section again.

Edit response to dev: Great, thanks for the fast response. I haven’t run into any other issues and still loving the humor. I’m just pat the light spirit at this point.

EDIT: This is fixed as of version 1.2 (5/7/2020)! Thanks again for the heads up. Will look into save points for a future update!

Hmm ok, thanks for the heads up! Already looking into it and I’ll try to deploy a fix as soon as possible. I’ll also see about adding more save points but that will likely be in a following update just so I can fix this bug quick first. Thanks so much for playing and sorry for the inconvenience!
