VRE is keeping up with advances in customer service technologies to greatly enhance your experience with our mobile app. We know that changes can sometimes be a challenge, and upgrading our app will be no exception, but we know that you are really going to appreciate the new functionality of VRE Mobile.
Here is what you can expect now and in the coming months:
Phase One (this version) - Upgrade to the New VRE Mobile: For existing users, the first step will be to have you upgrade to the new app. Your existing tickets will transfer over to your account in the new version of VRE Mobile. For your account’s security, you will need to re-set your password using the “forgot password” option and you will need to re-enter your credit card and/or your SmarTrip card number for your SmartBenefits. If you experience any difficulty with the new app, including any missing tickets, you can call customer service (800-743-3873) and our team will investigate and reissue tickets as needed. After you have completed this step, you will be in position to benefit from the new features coming in Phase Two.
Phase Two – Enhanced Trip Tools: The second phase will be an exciting one for passengers as we roll out a host of new tools to provide more information than ever before, and to make commuting even easier. These tools are expected to include:
Trip Planning Tools
Real-Time Parking Availability
Push Notifications (for service alerts, advisories, station updates, and VRE news)
Amtrak Arrival Information
The Commuter Connections’ Incentrip Reward Program
Special Event Ticketing
Once you have upgraded to the new app, you will receive notifications when each new tool has been added to VRE Mobile, to be sure you update your app on your mobile device to explore the new features.
Phase Three – Integration with Regional Transit Partners: We know many of you rely on our regional bus partners to complete your commute, so we are also enhancing VRE Mobile to enable cross-selling of their fare products, in addition to VRE tickets. In fact, we are already testing cross-sales with one of our partners and we expect this to be a truly valuable addition to the app.

Easy app for tickets but lacks alerts and real time info
I use the VRE app instead of paper tickets and works fine for me for its ticket function. And I like not having to worry about a paper ticket. My main complaint is that the app doesn’t have the actual times for train schedules (just a countdown in minutes to when the train is scheduled to arrive at each stop) or real time status (have to link through the website). It would be great to have push notifications when delays are occurring or for info on what’s happening when you’re on the train and there’s delays (instead of having to check Facebook and hope for info).
Also had a lot of difficulty when updating card info.
Great for its intended purpose
This app is just for buying and showing tickets and for that it's great. There is not really any other convenient way to convert smartbenefits to ten-day rides and for that I am extremely grateful. Admittedly it is cumbersome to connect your smartbenefits account to your VRE mobile setup, but once that is done you just use the app to buy tickets with your smartbenefits, a functionality that should have been available from the rollout of smartbenefits. The app should be called "mobile ticketing" because it seems everyone expects a more expansive app including train tracking, etc.
Might as well go online
Positives: I can purchase and validate tickets in the app.
Negatives: I can ONLY purchase and validate tickets and vain the app.
The rider tools tab just links out to the VRE website which is pointless. If I wanted to go to the website, I would just go to the website. When I’m on the train and attempting to get on the app, it takes longer when we are going to an area with bad cell service. So no, not reliable in being able to access things like the static schedule without being connected to WiFi. But then again, it doesn’t offer you the ability to see a static schedule because you will be directly to their website. I would have expected that their app would have the most basic of details regarding their service available without needing to be connected to WiFi.
