The HiRoad app uses the smart technology in your phone to measure your driving. The better you drive, the better your scores. The better your scores, the bigger your rewards. And, with the HiRoad app, you have the ability to improve your driving each month by following our driving tips.
The HiRoad app also lets you view your policy, pay your bill, file your claims and more, all from your device.
How does the app know I’m driving?
To earn rewards, you’ll need to record and classify your trips in the app. If you’re driving to work, you’ll classify your trip as “driving.” If you’re taking the bus or using rideshare, choose “not driving.”
Do I need to use the HiRoad app?
To earn rewards for your driving, yes you need to use the HiRoad app. You’ll want to check the app regularly and review all of your recorded trips.

So, why does HiRoad reward good driving?

Just recently switched to this insurance and already loving the way it works. Good driving=lower payments! The app is pretty straightforward but I feel it definitely can use some performance upgrades. One thing that you guys might want to think of is adding a GPS feature which would make it easier for you to track trips and make it easier for users as well. For instance: user opens app> uses GPS to drive to location> app automatically tracks trip and saves data which would ultimately remove the step of having to confirm a trip. But maybe perhaps still keep the trip confirm feature in case people don’t use the GPS. Just some thoughts. Thank you for this awesome opportunity for affordable insurance!

The accuracy of the app is crucial to getting discounts and although when I first starting using the app it worked correctly. Now it changes streaks and takes down my score for apparently no other reason except to give me a smaller discount. I have not used my phone while driving and not even when I’m in the car with other bc even if you say you weren’t driving it still penalizes you. My current stres says 9. Which is not true. Be on the look out for a new insurance company as soon as you get HiRoad and only use this company in a pinch. My vehicle was in the shop for a couple weeks. I called and informed them I would t be driving and I noted the app. My monthly bill still went up 30 dollars. Hiroad is a scam that targets ppl that are having a hard time securing another policy. My bill the first 2 months was $180. I drive the same car and use the same driving habits except I drive a little less and I have the same address I had when I set this plan up and now by bills the lat 2 months are above $210. Scam. Actively working with a broker to get out of the situation I got myself into when I signed up for car insurance through Hiroad

Hi there, Brian - we hear your frustration and want to help provide some clarity. The streaks feature is designed to encourage mindful habits and is separate from your driving scores or discount. While it may be frustrating to lose a streak, each trip is an opportunity to increase it, and it doesn't impact your monthly bill. Regarding your max rate and monthly bill, if your car was in the shop and no trips were logged, we can't reward what we can't see. Without trip data, your bill defaults toward your agreed-upon term max rate (which you will never exceed). Our app automatically logs a trip when it senses vehicle motion, so if it did log a trip and you weren't behind the wheel, you can always classify those trips within your current billing cycle. Marking a trip as "Not Driving" simply filters it out so we only score your actual driving; it is not a penalty. Since there are a few specific factors at play with your account, we would appreciate the opportunity to review your trips directly and answer any other questions you may have. The overall concept of this Insurance is nice. You drive safe, you save. It’s also handy cause it was one of the lowest rating insurances to find for older vehicles. Downfall is it’s constantly tracking your “movement/phone activity” regardless if you are driving or not. Gives you the option to put “not driving” but still jeopardizes your score/discount regardless. Why have an option like this if it doesn’t matter? It’s also not fair because the rate continues going up every month even though your “discount” is applied and you are safely driving. God forbid if you even just OPEN your phone screen (even if someone else is driving); it dings you. Totally not fair and hard for people who do use their phone/driving as their job. Like I said though, concept is great it just really is out to max you out for the top dollar amount of the insurance of $222 :/ with no real justification. Also very hard to get ahold of support and they aren’t very helpful. Don’t recommend this insurance at all

Our app records a trip when it senses a vehicle in motion and while it's pretty smart, you may need to occasionally go in and classify trips that have recorded. Trips that you're not behind the wheel for - or Not Driving - won't reflect in your scores or discounts once correctly classified. Hope that helps ease your concern! I originally signed with HighRoad after receiving a quote that had a max price lower than any other quote I got. My first bill was less than half of what I was paying before! I just renewed my policy for the first time and yes the rate went up about $20 (for the max price) but with all of the discounts my newest bill is only a few dollars more than I’ve been paying. I have filed a glass claim which replaced my windshield and recalibrated my sensors. I also went on a long summer road trip which dropped my “driving patterns” score, but still this insurance is far better than anything I’ve found. I was even able to get my glass replaced while out of state. Couldn’t be happier with the company and the price!
