Arboreal Tree — Tree Measurement with AR
Measure tree height, diameter, crown shape, and more — using nothing but your iPhone. No laser meters, no extra equipment. Just open the app, walk up to a tree, and let augmented reality do the work.
Arboreal Tree is used by foresters, arborists, researchers, and nature enthusiasts who need accurate, documented tree measurements in the field.
How it works
Stand near the tree, mark it with a tap, step back a few meters, and mark the base and top. Height is displayed instantly on screen.
What you can measure
Tree height and crown height
Crown width and crown shape
Trunk diameter and inclination
Point clouds and 3D models
Built for fieldwork
Great accuracy — comparable to laser altimeters
LiDAR support on compatible devices
Imperial and metric units
GPS coordinates saved with every measurement
Export data as .csv or point cloud files
Premium — for professional use
Premium turns Arboreal Tree into a complete field measurement system. Measure multiple trees in a single session with one shared coordinate system, export 3D point clouds to CloudCompare, connect Emlid Reach RX/RX2 for centimetre-level positioning, and sync up to 2,000 high-resolution images to the cloud. REST API available for integration with your own systems.
Trusted by foresters, researchers, and forestry organisations across Europe — including Sveaskog, Skogshubben, Treemetrics, Palos, Icebound, The Navigator Company, and SLU — Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

I think it works well, you definitely want to walk far away from the tree to get better results. I will know how accurate it is when the actual tree survey is done. But it worked for my needs, not perfect but definitely better than just guessing. Please add a DBH measurement option. Thanks.
3 different heights 4 same tree

I gave the app 2 instead of 1 star bc operator error is factored in. I downloaded the app bc of the good reviews and went outside to calculate the height of a tree I want to cut down. I opened the app and couldn’t find any instructions but it directed me to point at the tree trunk, did that and without further instructions I pointed at the bottom of the tree and hit the picture button and then pointed at the top (I was about 25’ away from the tree). It said I was too close so I walked away up a slight hill. The dot was off to the side of the trunk but I thought somehow the app still knew what to do and I tried to get it as close to the trunk as possible. I shot the top of the tree and got a measurement of 31’. To be sure, I tried again and it measured about 48’ and a third time it measured 25’. Waste of time and dangerous if you were to base a cut off this incredibly unreliable data. My suggestion would be to get a better app developer. Thorough instructions should be offered on the first page. I shouldn’t have to tell you that. I wasted my free measurements on just trying to figure it out. I need this type of measurement device but wouldn’t use these guys because of the time I wasted measuring (and writing this dumb review)

Sorry to hear about your experience. The problem is probably caused by either a hardware problem on your device or some strange way to use the app.To check if it is a hardware problem, test apples own measurement app "Measure". If it doesn't work well, it is a hardware problem. Please take a look at the Tutorial video here: https://youtu.be/trAZPfany8YIt shows how to use the app. Good luck with your measurement. / Johan
Accurate and Easy to Use

I had to measure a huge Eastern White Pine and started with my Suunto clinometer and a 100 foot tape and took 3 different readings from different locations. Then I tried the app and carefully followed the easy directions and took another three readings. All of these readings were within 1 percent of each other and within 1 percent of my clinometer reading. The height was 140.2 feet using three readings from each of the two methods. I am a retired forester and familiar with tree measurements. A couple of tips. You need to be able to see the very top of the tree and the base of the tree. You need to go out a hundred feet. You can zoom on your phone to get the crosshairs on the top and base of the tree. Don’t drink coffee before trying to take precise measurements or if you do put the phone on a tripod, but only for high accuracy. Newer phones have Lidar and that technology is getting better all the time. Great app and this New Hampshire forester won’t be hauling around a 100 foot loggers tape anymore.
Great for economically and efficiently managing trees.

I have been using Arboreal Forest for over a year now in my HOA Landscape Committee tasks. We manage about 1600 trees in our urban green spaces. With this app, I have been mapping and measuring large numbers of trees in about 30 seconds per tree and then downloading that list into spread sheets to use for inventory updates and creating tree maintenance work orders. It has helped us immensely in our efforts to manage an urban forest on a limited budget. Johan, the author of this excellent app, has been very helpful with advice, bug fixes, and feature requests. I highly recommend this app as a great tool for arborists and anyone else that need to manage tree maintenance.

Great to hear that you have found our application useful for urban forest management.
• Slenderness (h/d): shown right in the result and in the detail view once you enter the diameter, with an info button explaining the thresholds for spruce, pine, birch and beech/oak.
• Live crown ratio: calculated automatically from the tree height and the crown base height, with an info button explaining what the value tells you about the tree's vitality.
