CleverWords is for the people you play with: your sister across the country, the group chat, the friend you only see at the holidays. Take your turn when you have a minute. Your partner takes theirs when they have one. No one to play with yet? Pick a role in the Commons and we'll find you a partner.
HOW IT PLAYS
One player looks at a board of words and gives a one-word clue with a number, like "orchard, 3". Their teammate tries to find the three words it points to. Read each other well and you clear the board. Read it wrong and you hand the other team a word, or land on a word that ends the game.
WAYS TO PLAY
• 4-player: two teams of two, a setter and a guesser on each side. First team to find all its words wins.
• 2-player: co-op with one teammate. One of you gives every clue, the other guesses, and you swap when you play again. Clear the board in as few turns as you can.
• Minis: a small board of nine words. Pick a few, give a clue, and other players guess it later. Or guess theirs.
• Daily Guesser: a few real clues from real games, every day. Find the words each setter meant, then see what everyone else picked. Missed a day? Catch it up any time that week and your streak keeps going.
• Daily Setter: one board for everyone, every day. You give every clue and GuessBot guesses right away. Clear it in as few clues as you can, then see how everyone else clued the same board.
THE COMMONS
Want more games than your friends can keep up with? The Commons is where you meet new people to play with. Finish a Daily Guesser and give your first clue, or finish any game with friends, and 2-player games with other players open up. 4-player opens after three finished games. Pick a mode and a role, and the game starts when someone joins.
ON YOUR OWN TIME
Turn reminders tell you when it's your move, and that's all they do. No marketing. Chat with the table, nudge a friend who's gone quiet, and rematch with roles switched. Friends can join with a link or a game code, from any phone. On iPhone and iPad.
KEEPING IT FRIENDLY
You can report any message, clue, name, photo or bio, and block anyone. We read every report, normally within 24 hours.
FREE, WITH A MEMBERSHIP IF YOU WANT ONE
The whole game is free, including this week's Daily Guesser and Daily Setter. If you're not a member, you'll occasionally see ads. You can also choose to watch a short ad for one more game in the Commons.
Regulars is our membership, for people who want to back the game. It gets you:

• More games with new players in the Commons at once
• The archive: every past Daily Setter and Daily Guesser, to play any time
• More boards with GuessBot, beyond the Daily Setter
Pay monthly, yearly, or once for life. Monthly and yearly renew automatically until you cancel, which you can do in your Apple Account settings at least 24 hours before the renewal date. Payment is charged to your Apple Account. Family Sharing is on.

I’ve gotten most of my close friends and family members hooked on this app. There is definitely a learning curve and a need to explain (and even send screenshots of) the official Codenames rules to every player before the games are fair and competitive. First criticism - the ability to go beyond 3 words as a setter is not readily apparent. I didn’t realize I could swipe left until I witnessed a random opponent give a 5-word clue several days after I had downloaded the game. Everyone I’ve introduced to the game struggles with this realization as well. Second criticism - please provide an update that adds new words to the deck. While the base deck provides countless clue permutations, the fact that players feel like they’ve seen the entire deck after only 8-10 games gives off a feeling of staleness. Add a second deck, or at least 20 new words, in the next update to freshen things up. I’m telling you, I’ve had people lose interest and stop playing due to the repetitive nature of the word bank.

Thanks for the review! Great feedback - there’s definitely a steep learning curve for new users and we’re exploring options such as a tutorial to address that. That makes sense you didn’t know it could be more than 3 words and we’ll try to make that more apparent. Totally agree on the word list - we just added 200 more (bringing the total over 800), so hopefully you see more variety. Thanks again for the review and feedback!

This is a fantastic app version of Codenames, which I love. You can play with strangers or with friends, or even make friends with other players! Unlike other phone games that feel like they melt my brain, this is actually challenging and stimulating. It’s been a great activity during the pandemic. Also, the developer and his family members actually play the game and enjoy it, so that’s a great recommendation in itself. I met them through the app and they’re really nice! And fantastic players.I highly recommend CodeWords ☺️.

I used to absolutely love this game! It’s so fun to play with friends and family. The new update, however, took away the feature to play with strangers! I used to be able to join a game as a setter or guesser and it would wait to put me in a game until it could find other players. It’s absolutely ridiculous that they took this part of the game away. It was so fun to play with others especially when my friends weren’t available. Please add this back. No clue why you would take it away!Also, the ads are getting ridiculous. There are way too many.

Codenames has been a sacred addition to our game nights. We’ve literally played several thousand hours in person, on tabletop simulator, on a web app. It’s the perfect game. This is sick. This helps us stay connected when we can’t make physical meetups. Thank you! Going to tell every single friend I know from the tabletop community. Any chance for adding friends and a opt-in chat in the future?0 clue and infinite clue functionality is a bit of a skill curve problem but maybe some version with those when player base gets larger?

• Boards are easier to read, especially in dark mode. Your team's colors, the other team's and the key cards stand further apart, including for color-blind players.
