A POWERFUL PUBLISHING PLATFORM
You no longer have to try and appease an opaque algorithm that decides if your friends are going to see what you posted. If they follow you, they’ll see it.
If you publish it to the open web, it’s accessible on the open web. You can safely share links to Mastodon in the knowledge that anyone will be able to read them without logging in.
Between threads, polls, high quality images, videos, audio, and content warnings, Mastodon offers plenty of ways to express yourself in a way that suits you.
A POWERFUL READING PLATFORM
We don’t need to show you ads, so we don’t need to keep you in our app. Mastodon has the richest selection of 3rd party apps and integrations so you can choose the experience that fits you best.
Thanks to the chronological home feed, it’s easy to tell when you’ve caught up on all updates and can move on to something else.
No need to worry that a misclick will ruin your recommendations forever. We don’t guess what you want to see, we let you control it.
PROTOCOLS, NOT PLATFORMS
Mastodon is not like a traditional social media platform, but is built on a decentralized protocol. You can sign up on our official server, or choose a 3rd party to host your data and moderate your experience.
Thanks to the common protocol, no matter what you choose, you can communicate seamlessly with people on other Mastodon servers. But there’s more: With just one account, you can communicate with people from other fediverse platforms.
Not happy with your choice? You can always switch to a different Mastodon server while taking your followers with you. For advanced users, you can even host your data on your own infrastructure, since Mastodon is open-source.
NON-PROFIT IN NATURE
Mastodon is a registered non-profit in the US and Germany. We are not motivated by extracting monetary value from the platform, but by what’s best for the platform.

I love this Mastodon for iOS app. It is accessible, very functional with voiceover. However, my main concern, is notifications. Voice the iOS screen, reader, is not announcing those like it’s supposed to whenever someone has posted/tooted some messages with links, whenever I follow somebody, or when the notifications are such anyone, or followers, voiceover is not announcing, even if I’m not within the app or not using it if I’m on a different app. Please explain to me why, this isn’t working for iOS correctly like it’s supposed to? It would be great if that can be fixed, and corrected. If somebody could fix it, that would be great. It would work great for everybody. Also, it would be beneficial to use the default system sounds, so that whenever someone has posted something, I can get a notification/banner and announcement right away when somebody has posted pieces of information on their timeline. so my question for you is, is this possible if that could be fixed? In the next few updates, for iOS 17 going forward? That would be awesome if that would happen, please and thank you.
Some things that could make the app great for VoiceOver

I’ve used Mastodon since early 2023, and while I broadly enjoy the freedom to see who I want in my timeline without ads, recommended content, and other algorithmic garbage, I feel the official Mastodon app could be better-optimized for VoiceOver. As a VoiceOver user, I do not need to hear other users’ URLs immediately after hearing their display names, as I find that’s more superfluous information I have to listen to before hearing the content of a post. Therefore, there should be an option in the app’s settings that determines how users are identified in the Home timeline, which could help reduce excess verbosity. Also, there does not seem to be any way I’ve found to clear notifications from within the app. On the web, I can reveal my notifications, click the “Show settings” button, followed by the “clear notifications” button to clear notifications from the web view, however they are still displayed in the app with no way to clear them. Similar to other apps which show notifications, there should be a “Clear” option in the actions rotor for notifications in the official Mastodon app, or alternatively, an option that’s revealed when triple-tapping the notification to access a context menu. Also, when clearing notifications from the web, they should also be automatically cleared from any apps signed into that account.
For all the trouble, it’s lame

This app really isn’t as hard to figure out as some claim *for general use only* But once you are up and running, it’s pretty worthless. They only allow you to look at about 15-20 posts *a day*. Then it just says end of feed, and it won’t refresh for seemingly for a day. So never worry about doom scrolling again, I guess. Half the posts you are allowed to look at are pretty much other users talking about how superior they are for figuring out the app or obsessively talking about Twitter. The main talking point is that it’s amazing to not have an algorithm. First, in over a decade on Twitter, I never used the algorithm. But here, besides the feed with only 20 posts, there another short feed that’s just algorithm based. It shows recent posts with the most likes. That means the same handful of large accounts show up over and over. And there’s also posts asking for money to help run the app. If you do need help, the support instructions are in PORTUGUESE. BTW my server is in the UK, not Portugal. There does not seem to be a way to switch it to English. And forget trying to get someone in your “instance” (stupidest name ever) to respond to you. You’re completely on your own. The few posts I’ve seen from those running the thing, including developers responding here, all seem to imply you’re a moron for needing help and that superior people never need to ask questions. I know people are ridiculous about “elites” these days, but this is one case where there is a very distinct line between long time uses with major attitude and anyone new or needing help.

If you have a Twitter account, you might as well tell your followers you’re moving onto Mastodon. This app is simply amazing, it has an almost “Discord”-esque vibe to how communities are structured and ran. Whilst still following the same overall “platform” guidelines. As an LGBTQ+ person, I’m so happy to have frontline representation within the app by having an entire “LGBT” server search section within the app. This level of inclusion, for MY community is something that even Discord doesn’t have, and I want to thank everyone at Mastodon for including this into the app! Seriously, it means a lot to have one more app (in an honestly small pool of apps) that says “Hey! We accept and support your community. Period, dot”. All-in-all, I very much love the community inclusion. I also very much like the, well defined UI/UX, and its nice features such as using emoji like, Blobcat. Alongside super fast performance and rock hard stability, Mastodon is a good reason to finally abandon Twitter, and the toxicity, and lack of support or care from management.10/10 app.
While larger changes take shape behind the scenes, this update brings a few important improvements:
- You can now manage multiple logged-in accounts from the Settings screen (this has always been accessible by longpressing the current account avatar, but that was not easy to discover).
- A new media viewer, which maintains current functionality while removing a technical obstacle to further improvements to the app as a whole.
- Fix for [BUG] No audio while playing videos or audio before going full screen #1505
- Fix for [BUG] Quoted posts that are *long* are not truncated #1516
- Fix for [BUG] Encoded HTML entities in display names are applied. #1528
- Make language variants available in language picker (contributed by Poren Chiang)
- Refactor AccessTokenQuery to use multipart/form-data for OAuth POST requests (contributed by vitalyster)
- Significant code clean up (contributed by Jack Alto)
