I really do think this is superior to FD, which is what I switched from. The problems arise when converting FD documents to highland and vise versa. For example, in FD, you might have written something like, “John’s” and when you convert to Highland it will look like “John**s.” There are weird bugs like this that you need to deal with that ultimately translates to more work in the editing process. However, most of these are mitigated when writing a script natively in Highland. I just really want the developers to drill down and work out all these bugs, especially since they moved to a subscription model. If you are going to be collaborating with others who use FD, I’m not sure I can recommend this as you will most likely run into these annoying issues. If you work solo and prefer what is admittedly an easier and more streamlined formatting process, you may enjoy this a lot. My next script will be written fully in Highland and then I’ll really decide if I’m going to stick with this app or move back. The last one was half-written in FD and then completed in Highland, and that was a bit of a pain.

As a writer, every day is filled with insecurity. What am I going to construct on the page today? Is it going to be any good? I can't over-examine what I write before I write—I have to dive in and just go. If I scrutinize, nothing will be good enough. What's really great about Highland is its invisibility. It's just me and my thoughts; the words appear where they should. Dialogue is dialogue, action is action, scene headers are scene headers—without tabbing or thinking about formatting. The magic of Highland is how it frees me from the burden of writing and formatting simultaneously, allowing my creativity to flow uninterrupted. For any writer who's felt their creative momentum broken by formatting concerns, Highland removes those barriers entirely. It's become an essential part of my writing process, and the scripts I've created with it are all the better for it. If you're looking to rediscover the joy of just writing, Highland is the companion you need.

Excellent software from responsive developers. I’ve got to call out the low star reviews based on the subscription price. Those are not helpful to people looking at reviews of software. If you don’t want to pay, or don’t like subscriptions, don’t buy it. Sure, mention you are unwilling to pay subscriptions. But that has nothing to do with the software, and what people are interested in when looking at reviews, is how well does the software work. It’s up to each user to decided if they can afford it, or are willing to pay. This software works really well. It works for all types of writing, but for screenwriting uses regular text documents that can be opened on any text editor and formats it look like a screenplay using the Fountain markup formatting.
Subscription Model is Intrinsically Flawed

I’ve been a Highland user since the very first beta, and I love this program. I chose it because it was beautifully designed, highly functional, and completely free of bloat. That’s exactly why I don’t trust the subscription model—I believe it’s fundamentally flawed, especially at this price point. With a subscription model, developers are expected to push new features regularly. If they don’t, users feel cheated. That pressure alone creates a lose-lose situation. Most of us don’t want a constant stream of new features—we just want a rock-solid program we can depend on. The inevitable result is bloat, and Highland Pro risks becoming just like its competitors.I’ve seen this exact pattern play out with Adobe. From a monetary standpoint, subscriptions have been incredibly successful for them, but their software has grown clunky and bloated as they chase flashy new features instead of prioritizing stability and reliability for professionals.I’m not saying Highland will ever become Final Draft—but it’s not going to stay Highland either.I would much rather pay $50 once every few years for a stable, dependable program than $60 a year for features I don’t need being regularly pushed on me. It wouldn’t sting as much if Highland 2 were still supported, but users are essentially being forced into the subscription model. It’s a shame. I will have to move to something else.
Developer Response
Although Highland 2 is no longer available for sale, existing users can still download it from the Mac App Store (it's listed under your purchased apps), and we're still committed to providing bug fixes for the foreseeable future. In moving to a subscription model, we hope to focus more on providing a rock-solid experience than on adding unnecessary features, unlike the apps you rightly call out. With subscriptions, our goal can be to serve our existing users, rather than chase new customers.
