Note: 4X4 explorer is not designed for turn by turn navigation and should be used as a guide only. Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. Most mobile devices come with an in-built GPS receiver. However, it’s important to ensure the device you’re using has an in-built GPS receiver, as this is what enables location services that allow you to track your position. External Bluetooth GPS receivers can be purchased for use with devices that do not have one in-built.

Getting their slowly
Listened to my feedback and made a change in the next update, (Transparent header)
Currently in a good usable state, I agree with most people the map feels clunky with such big icons and result in removing all of them anyways, so are left with basically an unused feature.
Personally I miss having track difficulty shown on the tracks.
I am all for the subscription fee if that is what will make this app continue to grow and get better, but an additional $50 a year for a raster map pack which I already have in the previous app is a little bothering to say the least. I could put that behind me if I could get the same experience from the vector map, but I feel the raster map & topographical map made navigating in the car extremely easier as they were bold and big and could use the app from a much further zoomed back position.
All in all it is usable and will edit my review as the updates keep coming.

Clunky app
Having used the ‘old’ HEMA Explorer app for several years, this ‘new’ 4x4 Explorer version is difficult to use. Nothing is straight forward. The on-line manual is helpful but not especially comprehensive. In the old HEMA Explorer, one could make waypoints. It is not even available in this app. It was easy to do routing in the old app. Not so here. The data from the ‘old’ HEMA Explorer cloud CAN be transferred to the ‘new’ cloud, but . . . ONE FILE AT A TIME! Surely it wouldn’t be impossible to allow folders to transfer. The ‘old’ HEMA Explorer provided access to the special maps such as Desert Tracks, Cape York, Victoria High Country, etc. with a one time payment. Now if you want them it is a yearly subscription. It seems HEMA 4x4 Explorer uses the same base as CMCA’s GeoWickiX and just uses different maps with more detail. The POI’s descriptions shared by the two mapping systems are identical. I could go on.
Having said the above, the basic maps themselves are pretty good. Still, I’m not overly pleased with this app. The extra maps available (HEMA’s paper maps, Meridian and RoofTop are also yearly subscriptions). It gets pretty expensive over time.
Unusable
So very disappointed in this app. Crashes constantly even after deleting, reinstalling, and re- downloading offline maps. Online vs offline issue reported by many users still not fixed. There should be a user setting to have the app default to offline maps rather than having the app decide based on absence or presence of signal. ExploreOz Traveller gets that right. The vector maps have improved, but there are still contrast issues that make it difficult to see tracks and details at wider zoom settings. This makes re-routing on the fly very time consuming. Local support is friendly and helpful, but you can tell that they are tired of getting negative feedback. The development team all need to spend significant time in the bush in Australia with nothing but this app to navigate to understand where they are failing their users. I will wait for V2 to make a final call, but if they haven’t made significant improvements I’m out. I’ve been using ExploreOz Traveller in the meantime as my primary off-road app. It’s not perfect either, but the developer is very responsive and knows Australian conditions and challenges.
