I’m a windsurfer... not an IT expert. I already have an Apple Watch (the Ultra 2), but it looked like I would have to buy a thousand dollar Garmin so that I could track and map my windsurfing sessions, along with logging my average and maximum speeds... .... until I learned about Waterspeed... which does all that, and more (it even logs your heart rate and shows the wind strength and direction on the day), for free! Although IK’m really bad at computer stuff, I downloaded the app easily on my Apple Watch Ultra2, iPhone and iPad Pro... and it worked, first time. I had one small issue: I couldn’t get the iPhone to transfer the data to my iPad, so I contacted Waterspeed’s customer service chat line and I was talking to a Massimiliano (the creator) in seconds... and he walked me through the steps in minutes. It works. I’m on the water, trying to improve my personal best every day. It’s so good that I paid the extra few bucks to subscribe to the ‘pro’ version so that I could utilise all impressive the features. It was all too easy. I give it six stars out of five. I have received no recompense for my review.

Does exactly what it should but I want more!

As both a sailing racer and weekend cruiser, I find Waterspeed works very well for tracking performance on the water. It’s especially handy when I need to quickly check the speed on my Apple Watch while trimming sails and the main instruments are not visible. The interface is intuitive and provides the right information.That said, adding a few advanced features would make it even better. If Waterspeed allowed users to drop (current location or selected location such as the flagpole on the club house) pins for the port and start board start line markers; and then calculate the time to cross +/- mm:ss based on current speed and heading - it would be a game changer for club racers.

I recently installed the app on my phone and Iwatch 10 to enhance my wing foiling experience. I initially had trouble stopping the app on my watch and realised that you had to hold the crown down to expel the water from the watch speakers before you could stop the application and record the data. You may want to add this to your Help to advise Iwatch 10 users of this function. I also noticed that when I took a phone call on the Bay that the app still ran but did not expel the water from the speaker speakers at the end of my session.

Waterspeed provides all the useful information for a sailing race in a single clean user friendly interface. Weather and tide forecasts make it easy to prepare and decide on tactics. The countdown feature on the pro version helps catch that perfect start. During the race the app provides real-time speed and direction while tracking your position. All this data is then all available for performance review, to save in the diary and share with crew and friends.
