Industry Leading Security Features
Messages are stored on Proton Mail servers using end-to-end encryption at all times and are transmitted securely between Proton servers and user devices. This largely eliminates the risk of message interception.

Zero Access to Your Email Content
Proton Mail's zero access architecture means that your data is encrypted in a way that makes it inaccessible to us. Data is encrypted on the client side using an encryption key that Proton does not have access to. This means we don't have the technical ability to decrypt your messages.

Open-Source Cryptography
Proton Mail's open-source software has been thoroughly vetted by security experts from around the world to ensure the highest levels of protection. Proton Mail only uses secure implementations of AES, RSA, along with OpenPGP, while all of the cryptographic libraries used are open source. By using open-source libraries, Proton Mail can guarantee that the encryption algorithms used do not have clandestinely built-in back doors.

Proton Mail in the press:
“Proton Mail is a Gmail-like email system which uses end-to-end encryption, making it impossible for outside parties to monitor.” Forbes

“A new email service being developed by a group who met at MIT and CERN promises to bring secure, encrypted email to the masses and keep sensitive information away from prying eyes.” Huffington Post

Good but tapping out emails can be sluggish

Just moved business email across. Really like Proton mail for dedicated email & security, but have noticed when composing emails with the iPhone app that tapping out a message encounters some lag at times. — Developer: thank you — will try that! — What would also be good would be the ability to ARCHIVE an email when it’s open, with a single click from the bottom of the screen. At the moment you must tap the 3 dots and ‘move to archive’. You can also swipe right from the list, but a single tap archive button from within an email is very handy :)

Developer Response ,

Thank you for taking the time to review our app! We are sorry to hear about the issue you've experienced. Please report this to us using the in-app "Report a bug" button so we can help you with troubleshooting.

In the meantime, please try going to the app's Settings Menu, clearing the app cache, and disabling "Alternative routing" to see if that helps.

Edit: Thank you for sharing your suggestion regarding the "Archive" button with us. We will forward it to our developers for future consideration.

Account renewal issues and slow support

I wasn’t using proton mail and forgot to disable auto renew.

I noticed the renewal charge for another 12 months on my statement so I reached out to proton mail and requested to close the account and refund the recent charge (times are tough).

Two weeks later no support other than auto responses from Zendesk. No human response.

I Reached out to Amex and created a dispute in order to get some support and refund the charge.

Proton then locked my account access because I reached out through Amex. I’m sure the thin veneer to justify is “account security” despite them failing to recognise the open support ticket requesting a refund and now Amex requesting the same.

They insist that I “am a user” of their service since because I logged in after the renewal date, which was only to check and ensure what I had already turned off was in fact turned off (auto renew) and to contact support to request a refund, I am an active user - see, the logs prove our logic.

I’m sure their is a BS definition of “a user” in their TOS - super, great support PM.

Now I am locked out of the PM account and have paid for 12months for a service I do not want to Nir have used. Such a waste of time this is and typical of faceless technology companies.

If we interacted face to face im sure your support would be different.

What should be a simple matter is now a multi touch point matter. What a waste of my time.

Developer Response ,

BE WARNED - using Protonmail can pose serious risks

I have successfully used protonmail for some time until recently; however even if you record your written password and later enter
the password having a transcription error -Protonmail will lock
you out of your account on the grounds you the account holder being viewed as a hacker , or robot ! Trying log back into your account is guaranteed to be made a nightmare and almost impossible as no matter what - you the paid account holder is not viewed as legitimate subscriber.
Never put all ‘your eggs in one basket’ when it comes to protonmail as once you lose access all your important email records are lost as well as you money .Protonmail can ruin your life as constantly viewing you the account holder as a hacker , and no endeavour by subscriber is considered by protonmail in helping you to reestablish login acces to your to your paid account .

Developer Response ,

We are sorry about the inconvenience. Please note that, if you are certain that you are entering the correct credentials and still receiving an error message saying that your credentials are incorrect, please go through the following list of fixes for common login issues: https://protonmail.com/support/knowledge-base/common-login-problems/. If none of them work, make sure to contact us at: https://protonmail.com/support-form where our support agents will provide further assistance.
