Return to running after having kids

I wanted to find an app to help me return to running after having children. I’m also studying at Uni so I needed something that was easy to tailor around my busy schedule. I had seen Runns advertised all over social media but once I saw it sneak into my Strava feed I decided to give it a try. I’ve been so pleasantly surprised by this app and have not stopped recommending it to my friends. Setting up the training plan is so personalized, you can choose your fitness level and how many days a week you can run, what you goal is and you can also add in strength workouts, Pilates and mobility. I like that you can just do general training, train for a distance or train for a specific race. The program is easy to follow and it’s flexible and easy to move training days around if you need to. The training itself is a really good achievable progression and the prompts are really helpful. I had some questions about putting a taper week into my plan to run another event that wasn’t in my plan so I used the message function to ask the Runna team and I got a really helpful personalized message back with recommendations on how to reschedule my week. For the price point you can’t beat that service!

Only the beginning

It’s exciting to see where this format of customisable training can go with greater feedback from the runner during individual runs, and the progression of the program overall. Like heart rate changes and customised prompts to give you more feedback on the run, plus assessing exactly how you’re progressing with a better way to crunch your data against the the unique variables. I don’t want to say AI, but as we learn about ourselves and what our bodies can do through running, the technology is obviously playing a complementary role. I think Runna is perfectly placed to explode this new world into another level in due course. Grounded by learning and education, the customisation is key. Having the flexibility to shuffle and adapt the program as life throws spanners is especially relevant in getting runners out of the fixed/rote mindset of trying to follow a program so absolutely that they forget to listen to themselves. Runna helps you do that well, which is a big stretch for a tech-led solution, cause of course we don’t want to lean on the technology too much. But in time, I’ve gotten used to it and have learned not only to trust it, but to look forward to every new run, and what it’s helping me bring to it each time in terms of improvements.
