Google Authenticator works with 2-Step Verification for your Google Account to provide an additional layer of security when signing in.
With 2-Step Verification, signing into your account will require both your password and a verification code you can generate with this app. Once configured, you can get verification codes without the need of a network or cellular connection.

The app does not back up QR codes to iCloud. Losing access to it usually means losing the accounts that depend on it, if you don't store the recovery codes.
Good app for generating acces codes for multiple accounts but it need to have backup option with Touch ID for transfer to new device or other option when it must be set as new again...
No way to backup
There is no way to setup the app on new phone. You have to manually initialize all your codes and that is not always possible, so you either lose access forever or doomed to long email conversations with support...
