To play it is to love it
One of the best games I’ve ever played. Great setting, fantastic narrative, engaging gameplay. The hand drawn graphics and soundtrack are incredible. This re-release even has iPhone X/XS/XS Max screen support.
If you’ve tried this and liked it, please pick up Transistor. It was also created by Supergiant Games and proved this studio isn’t a one hit wonder, and is available for iOS. If you own a PC or PS4, I’d also recommend picking up Pyre; it’s unlike anything you’ve played before, in the best way.
Since I originally wrote this review Supergiant have released a game in Early Access, called Hades, available for PC via the Epic Games store or Steam. Never before has a game studio been so unbelievably, consistently, good.
One of the best games on the app store
This is a rerelease from the developers after their previous publishing contract ended, which means it’s gone back to square one with reviews - rest assured, though, this is an absolute classic.
You can find a ton of reviews online that give this nothing but praise - it’s beautifully drawn and animated, it has an amazing soundtrack and inspired narration, and it’s one of the best action games available. Plays as smooth as butter.
Get it!
Great game, but not so great of a port
Bastion is great - a debut title from one of my personal favourite independent developers.
It’s a fairly basic, but well designed action-RPG game. It’s a story driven adventure, with handcrafted levels, weapons and item placement. The adventure lasts for about 6 hours and is well worth it. A fairly simple gameplay is elevated by wonderful art and soundtrack and great writing and VO.
So why only free stars? Because playing it on any other device is a better idea - any potato PC can run Bastion, and you will be better of playing it that way. While Bastion has partial controller support, the port seems to be done from before that was an option - as such game’s controls were gutted to accommodate touch screen controls. Playing with a pad feels unresponsive, and control scheme is very impractical - you also can’t navigate menus with it.
I also have some doubts regarding including content (just started, and there are some changes from the original, which might suggest cut content - I need to investigate further to be 100% sure).
Overall, great game, but if you can, play another version of it.
