Collins British Bird Guide takes 262 of the most commonly seen British & Irish bird species from the award-winning Collins Bird Guide and presents them in the same easy-to-use practical format. Search for a species by location, time of year or plumage traits; browse the stunning illustrations by Killian Mullarney and Dan Zetterström; read the authoritative text by Lars Svensson; check distribution against the up-to-date maps taken from Bird Atlas 2007–2011; or listen to any of the hundreds of sound recordings.

First rate app
Returning to birding in the UK after 20+ years, I wondered if I would need to dig out my old guidebooks, or if there was a suitable app to do the job. Well, this app certainly does and more besides. As well as the excellent plates and descriptions found in the books, this includes a variety of calls and songs, the ability to directly compare common ‘confusion species’ and access to a comprehensive library of video clips (the latter for a few quid more, but well worth it in my opinion). For me, this is the ultimate modern British birding guide for anyone in the novice to serious amateur bracket.
A comprehensive guide
Having this on my phone means I always have a comprehensive field guide with me. It is easy to use and covers 99% of the birds you are likely to come across in the uk.
The descriptions of the birds are good, with the added bonus of breeding and wintering maps, a general habitat guide and most helpfully a songs and calls recording.
To make it more user friendly the search function could make suggestions after the first characters entered but otherwise a great app and well worth the money.
I purchased this app as I was looking for something decent to identify the various birds that frequent my garden and bird feeders. I find it very intuitive to use and like the line drawings of the birds, which include male, female and juvenile in both summer and winter plumage. Most include a song/call of the bird you are currently viewing. My brother-in-law is a serious 'twitcher' and reckons this app is as good as he has seen for the money and will be recommending it. 5 stars from me!
