Cricket Captain 2021 takes to the field for a new season. An exciting year includes the final of the inaugural Test Match Championship, and the new ODI World Championship, which gives teams the chance to qualify for the 2023 World Cup. The 100 Ball competition will run for the first time, introducing a new short format game. Cricket Captain 2021 gives you the change to play in these, and many more, competitions and formats.

20 Over match simulation has been improved for Cricket Captain 2021, with a rebalanced match engine and updated batting aggression bar, providing greater control of scoring rate. We have also increased outfield catches when batsmen are attacking. The target RPO (T.RPO) indicator has been replaced with estimated RPO (E.RPO) when batting, taking changing bowler tactics into account, to give greater scoring rate accuracy. Dot ball percentage has replaced maidens in 20 Over matches to provide further information about the bowling strengths and performance of your bowlers.

The exciting atmosphere of the Super Over makes its debut in Cricket Captain. The English domestic system has been updated with the latest rules for competitions and overseas players. We have also updated the South African domestic system, with 15 new teams.

Cricket Captain 2021 features a full database update, including new stats for fastest 50s and 100s for team, ground and versus records.

Central contracts

Would be nice as England international captain could select which players get a central contract.

For example if I were to develop a young player at county level and then use him in the primary international team. I could be paying (wasting) £70k a season for a player that may play 2 county games all season. No new central contracts are issued after the existing players (even though some in my game retired). Would be nice at the start of each season I could select which ones a centrally contracted

Going backwards

I’ve bought this game in one form or another every year since 2000, but I don’t think I will again. The database is still great, but the match engine seems to get worse every year.
The results of most games appear to be predetermined, regardless of what personnel you choose, or what tactics you use. For example, I’ve tried playing the same opening match of a County Championship season 10 times, and the end result is the same each time. The details vary (although not always that much), but the pattern of each game, and its result, doesn’t vary.
That makes for really tedious gameplay. Even if you do briefly get into a good position, you know that the AI team will come up with a miraculous recovery, regardless of conditions.
There’s also the same problem that the game has had from the start - some players, under AI control, perform like all-time greats, but under player control, they’re realistically average. In that trial game I mentioned, for example, G Munsey (in real life someone who has played a handful of county games over several years) twice made run-a-ball double centuries.
Frankly, this year’s game is a waste of time and money.

Seems like it’s been rushed out

Quite a few bugs in game and not much has changed. Super overs (if ever you get one), updated kits, updated leagues, updated database (again) and ability to now move countries via new job offers. Supposed game engine rebalance? T20 scoring improvements?

Controls are fiddly, gameplay gimmicky, scores very often unrealistic, ie, bowlers in Test matches going for 5 and 6 runs an over! still no umpire DRS or any major addition. Not the finished article I was hoping for. If you’ve got 2020 edition then stick with that, 2020 beats it hands down.
Save your money, at least until the last iteration when all the bugs have gone.
