I’ve tried a lot of apps for learning Japanese and this is probably the best one. It has a nice balance between beginner content and more advanced grammar and there’s no requirement to do earlier levels if you don’t want to. It’s well put together, with nice explanations, and has a good mix of question formats (multiple choice, sentence construction, listening, etc.)With that said, having used it for several months, I do have to say that it's a bit sloppy in places - there are a lot of typos and sometimes the audio recording is for the wrong sentence. None of this really damages it much as a tool for learning Japanese (most of the mistakes are in the English text) but it does make it look a bit rushed. I hope they dedicate a few resources to polishing that up a bit because it's the only real problem.
A mixed bag = frustrating experience!

I love that this app focuses on grammar and gives you instructions and reasons for when to use certain words etc HOWEVER:When it comes to testing at the end of each lesson: a lot of the questions involve grammar points and vocabulary that haven’t been taught yet / aren’t included in the lesson.Im one example: after following instructions on conjugating verbs my answers were wrong because the lesson didn’t discuss a particular irregular verb used in the test. The design is lacklustre - with lots of empty space and tiny text. New words not taught displayed in Kanji and taught words shown in Hiragana… make you second guess yourself. it’s all just a mixed bag. You’re forced to spend ages pouring over your dictionary translating sentences and teaching yourself new words just to answer the test questions, when you should really be taught by the programme.Invariably I end up making a lot of mistakes. This is part of the process of learning but it is disheartening.Errors are met with 😭 emojis and pop ups that cover your answers making it hard to review where you went wrong mistakes also don’t get any audio feedback. All in all it just puts me off learning via Bunpo. What’s the point when I’m being tested in things I haven’t been taught? I wish it was better thought out because this app’s focus on grammar could easily make it the best learning tool over better known bird-like competitors. It just needs better design and better thought out lessons and testing! I feel like I’m missing a book or a study guide that’s supposed to come with-
So good would 100% recommend

I have tried so many other apps but this is the best yet! I have learnt so much in 20 mins of learning! It customises to your needs and gives you info about your language and reasons why punctuation is that way at the start of each chapter! My only suggestion is that when using this app to have a book to write notes or practice alongside it. The lessons are quite fast paced, I have need it lots as I have been learning Japanese (hiragana) and needed somewhere to store info about the stroke patterns and meanings. The lessons and very accessible and you can retake them too! Best app for language learning I know!
Developer Response
Thanks for using Bunpo! Yes, empirical studies have shown that taking notes by hand can be a great way to strengthen memory when learning. The same goes for repetition, which is why subscribers can not only do any lesson at any level at any time, but also re-do those same lessons as many times as they wish! Happy learning, PandaBizz! 🌿🐼🌿
Great for a first-timer

I’ve only been using this app for about 30 minutes now, but I already love it. It’s so good how you can learn stuff, hear it, have time to write it down, be quizzed on it, then review your mistakes! I’ve only learned Hiragana: Vowels, and ‘K’ sounds. But I now know so much more. It’s so good how it teaches you words ,that would take you years just to get to irl, in minutes. That are simple to write and use known characters, but are more advanced. Like ‘aki’ (don’t have the Japanese keyboard) for autumn, or ‘koukou’ for pond. I also love how it tells you what part of an English word it sounds like. 100% recommend.
