I’ve been using this app for around two years now and my experience has been more than positive. I was a die hard Strava user for some years before that but became really tired of the the achievements and stats, for me, cycling and hiking is more about exploring new places and komoot has really helped me do that. The route building is second to none, like most things it takes some trial and error but once you get used with it, it really is that good. I plan all my routes on my desktop for more accuracy and you get an option to change the maps you’re planning on to open street, open cycle and both google roads and satellite, it doesn’t get better than that? If you’re not one for planning out your routes there’s an option to find a tour, you just select the desired activity, how hard you want it to be and even on your desired terrain then komoot will give you options of what’s in your area. Once you have a planned route you have the choice to simply follow on your mobile or a supported device like garmin, wahoo and hammerhead... I’ve used the routes on both garmin and hammerhead with no issues, uploading your activities is seamless as long as you’ve paired them first. Overall this gets five stars from me, my only gripe would be paying for premium, it should be a monthly subscription rather than just one yearly payment, I’m sure they’d get more people on board if they changed this.
Great for route planning when touring
Nickitynicknicknick
I have been looking for a decent way of creating routes on a mobile device with offline maps for some time and this is the best i have found. It is easy to use and adjust on the trail. Planning needs internet access but from that point on everything is offline which is ideal for touring abroad. We recently used Komoot for an 8-day in Montenegro and it was brilliant. The app found some great little back roads and only once tried to send us down a track that didn’t exist. Other than that, it did everything we asked of it. We used the iphone app for navigating (rather than transferring to a Garmin device) and it was easy to follow directions. The elevation profile was particularly useful while riding. However, it does use a lot of phone battery power to have the screen on for many hours and so i would suggest having a battery pack with you. Overall I would highly recommend this app and think the full unlocked map version is excellent value. I’m less convinced by the community aspect as it currently stands but for route planning and directions on the road it is fantastic!
Very poor voice navigation
archy_bold
I downloaded this app as I needed voice navigation for a couple of upcoming rides and had heard glowing reviews. I’m honestly quite surprised at the quality of feedback because I had a terrible time with it. The directions given were often confusing, sometimes given late and occasionally flat out wrong. I spent so much having to stop as I was told I’d taken a wrong turn. The least of its problems was that it clearly had little understanding of where roads start and end, giving directions where there was a private drive, or telling you to ‘keep left’ when it was intending you to take the middle of a three-pronged fork. It was occasionally dangerous, such as when it got the number of exits on a roundabout wrong and directed me on a motorway or sent me down a steep hill with cobbled speed bumps in the rain. It massively struggled with multi-lane junctions and in multi-lane traffic I’d get instructions to turn off far too late. Maybe my region (Manchester, Liverpool and Lancashire) is just poorly mapped compared to others or that the quality and layout of the cycle routes/urban areas are different to other countries and regions of the UK. But I had really high hopes for this and it let me down big time. The routing seems fine if you’re a road cyclist but the touring option took me down some very poor and dodgy routes, determined as it was to stick to cycle ways (they’re universally terrible round here). I’d advise sticking with the free version for plotting routes but check everywhere it takes you and adjust.

A mess
Hevghirl
I don’t know what has happened to Komoot but it’s become a hot mess. Using swipe keyboard with it is awful. It used to be seamless. Words are overwritten. You can’t get the cursor where you want it. You can‘t tap a word to overwrite it. You have to delete everything you’ve written. When you press delete it starts to remove whole words after the cursor rather than what was written before the cursor. I was in touch with the developers about an issue with double logging a tour and when that happened I couldn’t change the privacy. I was told to delete and reinstall the app, which worked. I was told it would happen from time to time but it happened again within a week or so and has happened several times. I’m not uninstalling an app every week or two. The voice navigation always tells me to turn too early. I get sent onto tracks then taken off it two seconds later. It tells me to go onto tracks that aren’t there. And OMG the Discover page is a mess. No chronological order. I have found myself liking/commenting on posts that are months old by accident, thinking it was a recent ride. It won’t show me more recent rides from people I follow either. It’s only when I visit their profile that I see they’ve completed a ride. I even had a friend’s ride show up as being just 2 hours before I went to view it, and have commented on how early they were out for a ride (it was showing him as being out at 4am), only for it to change after I’d commented to say the ride was the day before in the evening. It’s just an absolute mess on both my iPad and iPhone (the exact same issues are present on both).
