Great app with a dissapointment
I downloaded your app yesterday as I’ve been struggling to find a good application that gives me random articles within a category of my choosing. Your application does this perfectly and I applaud this it reminds me of a more sophisticated stumbleupon.
The downside being that I read around 4 articles and then was told I would need to upgrade to view more, I fully understand the need for making money but I really had only read around at maximum 5 articles. Being a student I don’t want to be pushing out more monthly expenses for an application I barely had a chance to try out before being shown a paywall. So maybe allowing a 1 week trial or at least 3 days to use the fully extent of the application, would make me want to upgrade and keep using your application.
A great app, but...
This is a great idea for people who like to read up on their favourite issues, however there are two things that make this app ultimately a disappointment for me.
Firstly, I'm based in the UK, an annoyance in itself, but the articles are mainly from the US, so articles on my topics of interest are irrelevant. Although they are quality articles, which is very important, they do not help widen my field of understanding in a UK context.
Secondly, and this is the real deal breaker for me, the bookmarking system seems to be a premium option. I just went through the app to pick up stories for my commute, so I bookmarked them, expecting to see them as a list when I hit the bookmark icon at the bottom of the screen. Now, my commute isn't underground, so I can read articles online, which I normally do. The bookmark feature should offer offline and online listing. So I get to my bookmark list and then I can choose whether I want the article offline. I bookmarked about 10 articles while I was browsing and then realised that if the content changes I may have no way of finding the articles again, making bookmarking pointless.
Other than this, the app is great. I like the workflow of the app and that you can award your monthly payment to a particular writer. Kudos for that! However, I'd like to see more content from the UK and the bookmarking to be a little more user friendly before I commit to a subscription.
Pros and Cons
A massive Pro compared to Flipboard ( my fave reading app) is the absence of advertising. The articles are well written, cleanly displayed.. and I love how it gives you an idea of approx reading time.
Cons are... well nobody wants to pay for the content surely. Tbf it’s cheap enough, but so far there’s nothing convincing me to pay, and I’m just scrolling to the free articles. I wish I could get rid of articles I’ve already read or scrolled past.. The UI is not great. Subjects are really broad. ‘Health’ for example is a very broad subject that I would like to define further.
