Monitor‪+‬ 4+

It’s a decent app but a shame the resolution can’t be a bit higher, I know this is a limitation of camera rather than app. Also a wired connection for iPhone would be great as connection can be a little laggy. At the end of the day you kind of want/need monitor to work flawlessly otherwise it becomes a hassle, great if you’re in a pinch but would probably use a dedicated monitor if possible.

This is so much better than Sony’s own Imagine Edge app, really well thought out and beautifully designed. It has all the functionality you could wish for in a monitor: low latency, LUTs, focus peaking, false colour, zoom, touch-to-focus, instant playback, on a high-brightness HDR iPad Pro. I’ve just completed a production with it (and a Sony A1) and found it super useful for the crew to gather around a 12.9” iPad on a stand.

However it does have to work within the limitations of Sony’s camera connection implementation and the limitations of Wi-Fi. The camera connection can be a bit flakey, sometimes taking a while to connect to the camera, which can seem like forever when shooting in time constrained locations. Even when on the 5Ghz network it struggled to keep a connection in Wi-Fi dense locations, and the image occasionally froze.

On balance, I’d still prefer to have this simple wireless monitor where we don’t have to worry about managing cables, and suffer a bit of connection troubles (if only Sony could make that more reliable).

I tried this a few years ago and was frustrated by dropped connections. I gave it another go when I got an A6700 and it’s brilliant when using the 5ghz wi-fi or hard wired through USB/lightning. Not sure if I’d trust it for pro work but this has all the features of a decent field monitor without having to lug around a load of extra kit. It even has features like touch to focus and track that are only just being introduced to external monitors.
Support were quick to answer questions about loading custom LUTs.
This is without doubt the best value camera accessory ever and a no brainer for video if you own a late Sony.
