Used to be a good app

I’m leaving a positive review as historically the app has been excellent and I don’t want to tank OS’s record - however since a recent major update it is borderline unusable. Maps take minutes to load (on an iPhone 15 pro) and usually requires closing the app and restarting even on gigabit WiFi. What this means when using the app in the field with little to no signal is that it’s unusable and wholly unfit for purpose. Downloaded maps also have this problem and often refuse to load without an internet connection - this is a joke. If it’s not fixed in the next few months I have to cancel my subscription on renewal and come back to change this review to 1 star, as befits this app in its current state. There are better map apps out there for this purpose, and while I like supporting the OS directly, there is a limit. Developers: 1. Fix load times (or have loading actually work without restarting the app) 2. Have downloads actually work offline and instantly, as they did before All the fancy new features are dumb noise when the most basic parts of a mapping app are broken. If they can’t do this in the next few weeks, OS needs fire whoever is in charge of this debacle and hire a new team who actually uses the app outdoors.
Great but bug prone

By far the best way to plan/record/follow routes for walking, cycling, running and more. The annual subscription is a fair price for what you get. Even if I’m walking locally on a route I know it’s still great to have open as it can open your eyes to other routes you can take and of course it records your activity. My only issues are as follows. The app can be buggy, particularly with log ins and subscription management. I wish they had a Apple Watch app so you could record your activity if local without having to lug your phone with you. For me the biggest annoyance is since they updated the app, if I record a route purely to add it to ‘My Activities’ you used to be able to not save the route at the end but still save your activity. This is no longer the case. You either have to save both or none. Well if it’s a route i do regularly, I don’t want to keep storing the same route every time I do it but do want to save the activity. Yes I could follow the existing stored route and then save that I completed it today, but I have a habit of doing random changes on my walks like retracing steps if I notice an animal or bird and I want to store all that as I like to reflect on my week, month, yearly totals to see if I’m improving in speed and distance. Even with these minor gripes it’s still by far the best outdoors mapping app out there. Team with what three words and hopefully you’ll never get lost again.
Wheelchair/ mobility scooter mode?
Mainstay (in game)
This is a good app that works well. I love having the 1:25,000 explorer maps easily available. However, I have a suggestion for improving the app. Please could you include a couple of modes for wheelchairs and scooters alongside the most for hiking biking and so on. Many people use mobility technology and it would be really useful to be able to see roots that are accessible. That don’t have, for example, styles or narrow gates. There could be two or three levels of accessibility for modes ranging from lightweight manual wheelchairs to heavy duty off-road scooters and wheelchairs like the Tramper and the TerrainHopper. I am not sure at this point whether it would be better to have an accessibility mode that applies to the existing transport times or whether to have wheelchairs and scooters are separate modes. I think you need to consult with app users to determine the best way of doing this. A useful organisation with expertise in these matters the Disabled Ramblers Association. I do think you would need to provide guidelines on how people describe their walk and perhaps provide some kind of verification method so that people can have confidence in what’s been posted. Many people use mobility aids either full-time or part-time and to have the ability to identify accessible routes would be really useful when deciding where to go for a ‘walk’.
We’ve given your OS Maps app a fresh new look with a redesigned map selector, added a new Outdoors Map for Ireland, two new US Maps from the U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service and made it easier to find the right route for your next adventure. Plus, we’ve squashed bugs and made things better behind the scenes. Update now and get exploring!
