Plexamp 4+

Absolutely stunning amp. A dream come true.

For many years, I’ve been looking for a music streaming app to replace my old iPod classic. With a large music catalogue, local on-device storage was not possible with lossless files. So I went with Synology not realising that Plex Media Server could hold all my files and then stream them to this amazing application on my iPhone. The killer feature for me is that Plex Amp has true gapless playback. Not even Synology’s own DS Audio is capable of that.

I also love the UI design and the way everything is carefully organised. I would happily pay ten dollars a month just to be able to stream lossless files with gapless playback. Three dollars feels like a steal. Please pass on my utmost thanks and gratitude to everyone involved with Plex Amp for making my portable music dream come true.

Almost perfect Plex accompaniment…almost!

As most of us know, the actual Plex app on iPhone has been unstable for years with constant crashing. As I have a large music library (a lot of which is not on streaming services) being able to have a downloaded version on my phone is vital so Plexamp picks up this slack. It’s much easier to download music to device via this app and the sound quality and playback options are great! Where it really falls down though is with the viewing options of downloaded material and lack of search function when offline. It would be great if we could have additional viewing options for downloaded material such as grid view, artist view, date released, genre, like the Plex app gives. The current endless scroll is painful if I want to listen to a band lower down the alphabet.

Probably the best for now

This is probably the best app overall for those who want to stream high quality music to their devices. Stability, playback controls and sound quality are all great.

Improvements that would make this even better:

01 - I manually manage my metadata on Plex Media Server. This works quite well but Plex still automatically categorises some albums incorrectly, such as EPs, live albums & compilations. There should be a way to edit/override this auto categorisation, especially when I manage my own meta.

02 - I have a large catalogue for some artists with 100+ versions of the same song from different live sets. When searching for a song with 100+ different versions, Plexamp only returns 50 tracks. Can you please add a setting to return maximum results?

03 - The ability to filter track search results high/low based on album name or similar would also make a much more powerful search/library system.

04 - I have about 600GB music and download lots of albums to Plexamp for offline listening. It would be nice if I could access these albums via the Library so I have better sorting options. The download section is too basic and it quickly becomes difficult to find anything.

01 - You can edit/override via tags in the files.

02 - We've bumped that from 50 to 100 for the next release.

03 - You can use the Library > Tracks > Filter to do more complicated queries and sorting.
