A Lifetime of the Irish Times
The Irish Times has been part of my life for nearly 80 years. Firstly I remember sitting on my grandfather’s knee while he taught me to read using the IT to show me the letters.
My next memory is of my father in fits of laughter reading Myles Na Gopaleen.
Dad always brought the ‘paper’ home with him and as children we would read the headlines and I learned to trust the news in it.
Many years later when there is so much false news and mis information I trust the integrity of the Irish Times - a nd find a balanced and truthful account of events which is very reassuring.
Am now 80 years of age and wherever I am, whatever I’m doing, I never miss reading the Irish Times. My father came home in the middle of the day from the office with that paper for his dinner - that was his time to read it, calling out snippets to us or our mum. She had her turn when we’d gone back to school or office. She tackled the crossword in the evening. When I got married the paper was bought each day and my love of crosswords began and of course photos of engagements and weddings appeared as well as deaths. Do people still call it hatched, matched and despatched?
There was a special family history and attachment as my
great-grandfather came from Scotland to be managing editor and the family became Irish from there on. He even got a mention in Ulysses and a front page for his funeral .
We lived in USA for a couple of years and mother unfailingly
posted the Saturday edition rolled up with a letter each week.I now read it online and share it with a daughter,a grandson (in NZ and Australia), and my sister .
Thankyou to all the staff of the IrishTimes for keeping me informed.
How to become 5 Star
It is great to have The Irish Times on I pad, available to browse at breakfast each morning. This is really missed by me on a Sunday. It is by far the best newspaper in Ireland. I enjoy the extra magazines and the addition of the “ Latest News” is the icing on this cake.
One suggestion, as I am an avid fan of your crosswords, would you please, please, print an extra set of crosswords each Saturday to entertain me and others on Sunday evenings. Do this and you will be rated as a FIVE STAR by me and I suspect many more of your loyal readers.
