It is a federal assistance program that provides assistance to individuals and families with low or no income. Although the program is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, benefits are distributed by the various states of the Union.

SNAP provides benefits to eligible low-income individuals and families through an electronic benefit transfer card. Benefits are automatically loaded onto an Electronic Benefits
Transfer, or EBT, card. This card can be used as a debit card to purchase eligible food at authorized retail stores. The amount received from the government depends on each family's income.

SNAP recipients receive money to spend at supermarkets and grocery stores. SNAP benefits can be used for food products such as bread, cereal, fruits and vegetables. They do not cover alcohol or pet food.
