What’s New

Version 16.4.4

Contains quality improvements to the previous 16.4.x releases. The changes since the 16.3.x release also include:

Reported Turbulence Map Layer
• Plan smoother and safer flights by seeing where pilots are actually encountering smooth air or turbulence with this powerful new map layer.
• The layer displays individual turbulence reports as color-coded dots representing turbulence intensity, which you can tap on to view the report’s age (up to approximately six hours old), altitude, airspeed, and the type code and wake category of the aircraft from which the report originated, as well as a list of nearby reports.
• An altitude slider is available to filter turbulence reports by altitude, and the Reported Turbulence layer is also available in Profile View, allowing you to view reports at all altitudes along your planned route.
• The new layer receives its data from Sentry and Sentry Plus devices, which automatically measure inflight turbulence and transmit de-identified reports via the ForeFlight Mobile app after each flight.
• Reported Turbulence is available as two subscription add-ons: Reported Turbulence (Low) provides access to all turbulence reports up to 14,000 feet, while the Reported Turbulence (All) add-on grants access to reports at all altitudes.
• The Reported Turbulence (Low) add-on is available free of charge to owners of Sentry or Sentry Plus devices on Pro Plus subscription plans and above who register their Sentry’s serial number at A 50% discount on the Reported Turbulence (All) layer is also provided to customers who register their Sentry.

US Lowest-Tilt Radar Map Layer
• See where precipitation is likely reaching the ground with the return of this popular map layer sporting lower latency and improved spatial resolution.
• The Radar (Lowest-Tilt) layer only depicts radar returns obtained at the lowest angle of the radar’s sweep, which better correspond to where precipitation is reaching the ground in the form of rain or snow.
• The new layer benefits from significantly reduced latency of 6 minutes or less and also provides enhanced spatial resolution, although the layer doesn’t yet support storm track markers.
• The Radar (Lowest-Tilt) layer is currently limited to the US and South Korea.

Runway Analysis: Landing Factor Selector
• Separately calculate a flight’s landing distance during pre-flight planning and before arrival to better comply with your SOP and industry guidance on mitigating runway excursions.
• While in the Landing Analysis or Emergency Return views, tap either the Surface Condition or Landing Factor fields to access the new Landing Factor Selector.
• Select either Pre-Flight / Dispatch or In-Flight / LDTA under Phase of Flight to access different options for surface condition and landing factor, with the latter also supporting runway condition codes in place of actual surface conditions.
• Selecting different surface conditions in either mode will also automatically filter the list of available landing factors, which are more clearly labeled with both percentage and factor multiplication equivalents.
• Additional settings related to landing factor selection are also available in More > Aircraft > Field Performance > Landing
• Available with ForeFlight’s Runway Analysis add-on for supported jet and select turboprop aircraft.

Runway Analysis: TOLD Card
• Brief your takeoff or landing with a clean and printer-friendly summary of the most critical pieces of information produced by Runway Analysis.
• In the Takeoff or Landing Analysis views, tap the new TOLD button next to the Summary button in the upper-right corner to view the TOLD card, and tap the Send To button in the top-right to share or print it.
• Available with ForeFlight’s Runway Analysis add-on for supported jet and select turboprop aircraft.

Who do you ask?

When you have an Apple iPad, Multiple Garmin devices, and Foreflight… who do you call to get a straight answer in regard to “How does this Hardware and Software connect together?”

Well, in my case I have 5th gen iPad mini running Foreflight software, a Garmin GNC 355, and I’d love to know if it’s worth the $8000 to buy a Garmin GNX 345. To be worth it, I would need to KNOW for certain that I could communicate both directions between the 355 GPS and the iPad / Foreflight AND also receive all of the ADS-B in as well as Weather from the GNX 345. Does Garmin who produces the $20K in avionics know… no they don’t, they directed me to Foreflight. Does the Avionics ship know… no they don’t, they direct me to Foreflight. When I look at Apple connecting multiple devices via multiple Bluetooth connections they say yes you can have multiple Bluetooth connections and then give an example of connecting multiple ear buds which will play a common source of music BUT that is not the same as connecting into two complex avionics with bi-directional communication on at least one of the two. Long story short, just send the question to Foreflight is my recommendation because within hours of me doing so, I had a response which said definitely that I could simultaneously connect both the GNC 355 and GTX 345 via Bluetooth to my iPad, transfer flight plans back and forth and also get the weather and ADS-B in traffic info through Foreflight…. Thank you Foreflight support team

IFR-Pilot ,

We use this daily!

We fly 12 to 18 hours per week with ForeFlight and Stratus 2. ForeFlight has come along way since it’s introduction with synthetic vision, excellent integration with Stratus and so much more. I did get concerned with the previous version as we started having multiple crashes on two different newer iPads daily. We do load multiple waypoint and it seemed like that might have been a factor? I always make sure my iPad has plenty of open SSD space and the newer iPads have 2GB or more RAM, so I wonder if the software rolled out too fast? We’re also very careful about not updating the OS until the all clear is given. I just hope ForeFlight’s team slows down a little on all the bells and whistles. It’s much more crucial for the product to work flawlessly versus having 3D views of airports / etc. All in all ForeFlight is the BEST aviation App on the market and their team is obviously awesome at coding. My concerns and comments here about previous crashes are only because we’re addicted to ForeFlight and never want to see it burdened with issues. The new version seems to be more stable with only the rare crash. It does open back up in seconds right were you left off. Keep up the good work. Thanks ForeFlight!

Life Saver

Early in my flying career, shortly after my first solo but before my ppl check ride I was saved by Foreflight. Flying solo, I was out practicing maneuvers and not paying any attention to the weather that was coming in behind me, and covering the airport I was to return to. When it was time to come back I pointed the nose toward my home base and before I really knew what I had done, I flew vfr into imc. No where near instrument rated I was truly lost in a sea of white. Thankfully I had Foreflight on my iPad with synthetic vision and the stratus 2 feeding attitude information. I transitioned to flying the plane like a video game watching that screen. I was able to keep the plane under control and maneuver though and out of the imc to and alternate airport and land safely. It was an absolutely terrifying event for me. I truly believe the outcome would not have been even close to this had Foreflight not been in the cockpit with me. For this I am truly thankful and fly with Foreflight on every flight. Through the years Foreflight has only increased its capabilities and has never let me down. I recommend it to everyone who flies. Thanks for a great product and saving my life.
