The Worst Banking App

The title is not an exaggeration. Through multiple credit cards, multiple brokerages, crypto, a checking account, and a savings account, I have a lot of banking apps on my phone. Franklin Templeton is the worst one, and that’s by a long shot—it’s not even close. Obviously, somebody has to claim that honor, but the gap shouldn’t be this big. For example, I like the fidelity app slightly more than the Schwab app, but some of that is just preference. Comparing the Franklin Templeton app to either of them feels like comparing an NFL player’s athleticism to a middle school art teacher’s.

It crashes. It glitches. It bugs. And once you’re lucky enough to actually log in, you can’t do anything except check your balance. You can’t even see a chart, just the numbers. Forget trying to read anything about a specific fund you might be researching, you’d be better off flying to Wall Street and asking the first successful looking man in a suit that you see on the street.

They have improved it slightly in the past year, but it feels more like a half-baked placating attempt rather than a genuine endeavor to actually improve the situation. I don’t know about you, but I want the person/people who are holding/managing my money to have a genuine desire to improve situations….

My fund with them has done well, though! But that has nothing to do with the app, does it….

2009 is calling…

This is a pretty low effort app here. You can see balances and I suppose make some trades. 15 years ago this would have been ok. A company that asks me to put hundreds of thousands of dollars in today should have higher standards for themselves. The iPad app isn’t even rescaled for the larger screen, so you’re looking at the iPhone app in the middle of a sea of black. Product managers obviously aren’t watching.

Developer Response ,

We’re sorry you’re disappointed with the app. The app is intended for use on iPhone and Android mobile devices, not tablets or computers. Currently on the app users can view account balances, view/modify/delete account options, view dividends and capital gains, change an address, make a purchase, make a redemption, and edit profile information. We look forward to sharing future enhancements with you.

Basic

It definitely shows that this is the first iteration of the app. Interface is basic. The information you can look up on your accounts is basic.

Also not entirely accurate. There’s a bug that shows my buy transactions are listed under one fund, and all my dividend transactions are listed in another fund.

The way this was set up, you’d think this was someone’s senior year capstone project. Not sure why this was released to the general public in its current state.
