Extremely inconsistent experience with this app. When it comes to identification you want something thats reliable. You would expect this app from a contractor the state hired to be able to do that. But no, it works, just not when it matters. One time the app just didn’t work and I had to reinstall and set it up again. Just now the ID just was not showing at all until after I closed it and opened it again a few times which prompted me to write this review. If any of these moments occurred during a moment when I absolutely needed my ID, I would have been screwed. I have no idea why the state of Virginia cannot just provide integration with the Apple Wallet like about a dozen other states. EVEN WEST VIRGINIA HAS THEIR ID AVAILABLE IN APPLE WALLET. Cmon now, what were yall thinking. Overall it is a good, simple app but the unreliability just kills it. Please please please add integration woth Apple Wallet soon because yall got ripped off big time with who you hired to make this.
Won’t Register My Face…but at least there’s irony!
Jane Dowrick
Among the worst experiences with an app ever. In the end, not even able to register in the system - so no ability to use the app. The registration process has a bit of irony, though. Apple Face ID allowed me to open my phone, download the app and open the app, after deleting the earlier version I had attempted to install over a year ago before coming up against the same issues: The problem still arises in registering in the new and improved version of this app - OK, maybe new, but not improved. All I’ve gotten after dozens of tries is “Oops. We can’t verify it’s your face.” So, passcode security on my device got me to a place using the same technology (facial recognition) that doesn’t believe what the crack CBN/DMV tech believes. The app is actually quarreling with other facial recognition features while all I can do is watch with my face that no longer opens the secret door. Welcome to the brave new world.
Waiting till Apple Wallet
Once loved this
It is completely unacceptable that the Commonwealth of Virginia spent taxpayer dollars contracting a third-party developer (CBN Secure Technologies) to build a fundamentally broken, standalone app when a seamless, native solution already exists in Apple Wallet for free outside of integration efforts. The app is entirely unreliable. It routinely fails to retain data, forcing me through an arduous re-enrollment loop because it logs out or claims it "hasn't been refreshed in a while." An ID app that cannot be trusted to actually load and display your identification when you are standing at a counter or a checkpoint is fundamentally useless. So many states managed to integrate natively with Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. Virginia chose to reinvent a broken wheel. Do not waste your time downloading this. iOS now lets you add your US Passport directly to your Apple Wallet native app for TSA travel. Avoid this app until the state finally abandons this proprietary mess and delivers the native Apple Wallet integration they promised. One star is a generous rating. The good news is that Apple recently confirmed Virginia has finally signed the actual agreement to bring native driver's licenses to Apple Wallet, and the DMV changed their official wording to "coming soon." Until that actually happens, delete this app, let it sit on the back burner, and use your passport in your Apple Wallet at the airport.
One of the worst apps I’ve ever used in my life
User200374
If I could give this zero stars, I would. This has got to be one of the biggest insults to anyone I’ve ever seen. I try to imagine the thought process of whoever released this: “Let’s create an app that no one can use and is so user unfriendly that even the one thing that the user absolutely needs to even use it won’t work: the scanner. I’m not entirely sure why you would not allow a manual entry for this because the scanner is horrible. It’s blurry, and it’s like it was taken on an old flip phone you found in a Tibetan cave. Why is it that government websites, apps, and graphics in general (including the user experience) are among the worst. I understand you’re probably replicating how most people feel anyway dealing with the government/DMV, but this is a bit on the nose, isn’t it? Just add it to Apple wallet already and delete this awful app.
