WHAT ARE MONTEVIDEO UNITS?
MVU (Montevideo Units) is a measurement of uterine contraction strength, introduced by Caldeyro-Barcia et al. at the University of Montevideo in 1957. The formula sums the amplitude of each contraction (peak minus resting tone) over a 10-minute window.
Educational reference ranges:
Under 95 MVU: Lower range
95 to 200 MVU: Typical range
200 to 400 MVU: Higher range
Over 400 MVU: Very high range
