New in 2.0: post flood photos, see flooding live in your town, and get alerts for your street. The live flood map is now free for everyone.
FloodRoute shows which coastal roads will flood at high tide, and when, and lets neighbors post what they're seeing.
As featured in The Ark (Tiburon, CA).
NEW IN 2.0
• Post flooding: take a photo of the water and FloodRoute adds the street, the time and the tide height. Share it to Instagram, Facebook, Nextdoor or a group text in one tap. Faces are blurred automatically.
• Live flood photos: see what neighbors are posting right now, in every FloodRoute town.
• Spotter profiles: tap a pen name to see a neighbor's flood photos, badges and Call it record.
• Live water levels: forecasts follow the real water, not just the tide tables, so they catch the surges tables miss. In two years of testing, next-day forecasts landed within 3 inches of the real water 80% of the time. Tide tables alone: 28%.
• Exact times and streets: scrub through the day and see which roads flood, and when the water drains.
• Share live flood maps with anyone. They open in any browser, no app needed.
• Map my town: ask for your town and rally your neighbors. The most-requested towns are added first.
• Call it: guess how high the next big tide will get. NOAA's gauge decides who was closest, and the best callers top a 30-day leaderboard.
• Badges: first on the street, Street Keeper, and thanks from neighbors.
FREE FOR EVERYONE
• Live flood map for your town

• Alerts before flooding in your town

HOW IT WORKS
FloodRoute combines NOAA tide predictions and live water levels with high-resolution USGS lidar elevations for low-lying roads, then checks which stretches the water reaches. Predictions are calibrated against documented king tides, factor in recent rainfall in Marin County, and improve with every neighbor report. Every town also has 30 years of flood history at floodroute.com.
DATA SOURCES
• NOAA CO-OPS: tide predictions and live water levels
• USGS 3D Elevation Program: road elevations
• OpenStreetMap and Overture Maps: road geometry
• FEMA National Flood Hazard Layer: flood zones
• Open-Meteo: rainfall and barometric pressure
• Neighbor reports and documented king tide flooding: calibration
WHY I BUILT IT
FloodRoute started with my Nextdoor neighbors in Marin County. I shared the idea and got nearly 200 requests in 24 hours. It's still built by one person, and Pro keeps the free map free.
IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE
FloodRoute provides estimates only and is not a substitute for official warnings. Conditions change quickly. Never drive or walk through flood water: turn around, don't drown.

After the recent floods in Marin, I know I am quite happy to see this app having been developed, and I know many others will be as well. Looking forward to the expansion out to Oakland where I also spend a lot of time. So far, so good with the functionality. Offers a lot of helpful information in one place, and we will really get to test it out fully, next time the king tides do their thing….

Shared flood forecasts now show the map: the roads that flood, in color, right on the card. Post it to Instagram, text it to neighbors or save it, and everyone sees exactly where the water's coming.
