New for iPhone Duo: fold it like a laptop — your Mac above, the keyboard below. Nothing to install on the Mac; just turn on Screen Sharing.
Headroom is a remote desktop for controlling a Mac
from your iPad, iPhone, or another Mac.
The big idea: nothing to install on the Mac.
Turn on macOS's built-in Screen Sharing — that's the whole setup.
WHEN YOU WANT IT
• Drive the Mac in the next room from the couch
• Manage a headless Mac mini — no monitor, no keyboard
• Peek at your dev machine or build server from wherever you are
• Reach your home Mac from anywhere over a VPN such as Tailscale
WHY HEADROOM
• Zero install on the Mac
Connects straight to macOS's built-in Screen Sharing (VNC).
No server app, no agent, no menu-bar daemon.
• Finds your Macs automatically
Macs on the same Wi-Fi appear instantly via Bonjour.
Manual IP connections work too.
• Fast, smooth screen
Metal rendering plus ZRLE compression — feels real-time on a LAN
and stays usable on thin connections.
• Touch that makes sense on iPad and iPhone
Tap to click, one-finger scroll, long-press to drag and select text,
two-finger wheel scrolling, pinch to zoom.
• Real mouse behavior on the Mac
On a Mac (same app), clicks, drags, and right-clicks pass through 1:1.
Option-scroll pans; Command-scroll zooms.
• Full keyboard, and your voice
Software and hardware keyboards both work. Modifier keys (⌘⌥⌃⇧)
tap once for the next keystroke or double-tap to lock —
every shortcut is reachable. Tap the mic on the keyboard and what
you say is typed straight into the Mac.
• Private by design
Credentials live only in your device's Keychain, and passwords are
encrypted in transit using Apple's standard Screen Sharing
authentication.
• Made for iPhone Duo
Half open like a laptop, your Mac sits on the upper screen and the keyboard
on the lower one. Fully open or held like a book, the Mac spans the inner
screen; closed, the outer screen works on its own. Nothing is drawn across the fold.
CONNECTED IN THREE STEPS
1. On the Mac: System Settings > General > Sharing > turn on Screen Sharing
2. Open Headroom — your Macs appear automatically
3. Sign in with the Mac's username and password. Done.
HEADROOM PRO
• Unlimited connection time
• Every future Pro feature included
REQUIREMENTS
• Client: iPad / iPhone (iOS 17+, verified on iOS 27 and iPadOS 27), Apple Silicon Mac
• Host: any Mac with Screen Sharing enabled (no extra software)
• Same network; for internet access we recommend a VPN such as Tailscale

Exactly what I needed to view & control my MacBook when stepping away from it during a call. Simple and intuitive interface!I had one gripe: the key button that, if tapped accidentally, could post your free text password into Slack or a Google search. But, thanks to a developer who listens and acts quickly, the key is now easy to hide from the UI.I’d give 6 stars if I could!
Developer Response
Thank you, ekrub — for the fifth star, and for the gripe that earned it. The key button change happened because you wrote it up so clearly.Headroom 1.2.2 is now out on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Two fixes you may notice:• With an external keyboard, a modifier such as ⌘ could stay held on the remote Mac after you let go, so a plain "o" arrived as ⌘O. That no longer happens.• On the Mac, the Headroom window now reopens at the size and place you left it.Headroom Pro also works with Family Sharing, so everyone in your family group gets it too.If anything else gets in your way during those calls, tell us here — we read every review.
It might be fine…

I like the idea of this app and the fact that it uses the built-in screen sharing, but three minutes a day is not at all enough time to even orient yourself to the app the first time you open it. I saw that warning, decided I would test copy and paste real quick, and…it didn’t work the first time. Then the timer expired and now I have to wait until tomorrow to try again.I was more than happy to pay $15 for an app that worked, but less so to pay $15 to find out if it does. Even 10 or 15 minutes a day for the first week would be plenty, but three minutes is just not enough.
Developer Response
Thank you so much for the thoughtful, detailed review — I'm genuinely grateful you took the time. You put it perfectly: paying to find out whether an app works is not a fair ask, and three minutes isn't enough to even get oriented. In the next version, the free time will be extended to 10 minutes a day. I'm also looking into the copy-and-paste issue you hit on your first try. I hope you'll give Headroom another go when the update is out. — Haru
Headroom 1.4.1
• With several displays on the Mac, a button on the control bar shows them one at a time, filling the screen. Each press moves to the next display, and each keeps its own zoom and position.
• Folded like a laptop, iPhone Duo can turn its lower screen into a trackpad (switch with the keyboard; with an external keyboard it is the trackpad).
• iPad gets a trackpad too, from the button next to the keyboard on the control bar. Tap, then touch again and slide to drag — swipes and drag and drop reach the Mac as they are. Two fingers scroll, a pinch zooms, and a two-finger tap right-clicks.
• The remote-screenshot menu now takes 3, 4 and 5 from an external keyboard, and says how to select an area.
• Fixes the keyboard button sometimes missing from the control bar on iPhone.
• Fixes a crash that could happen when screen updates arrived back to back.
