The machine is an instrument now. With nothing playing, a touch on the glass plays the thread under it, and a drag across the threads strums them. PLAY's bar tunes the threads in STEPS, THIRDS or FOURTHS and records a LOOP to play over. On every watch, the watch app draws a night in red, and the complications are redrawn, with a new one for the corner. The widgets, the nightstand, the lock screen and the watch draw the night the way the app does: a line that walks to the Z. Each dream now sounds in a room of its own, and as a night deepens its lead voice moves away. ROOM, under PANEL, sends the sound to an AirPlay speaker. Press it again to bring the sound back to the phone. A Focus can offer the machine: tonight's pick for Sleep, STEADY for Work. It never sends a notification. SIGH, EASE, MEDITATE and FLOW now breathe at their own pace in the app, as they do on the web. The app no longer asks for the microphone. Shortcuts can start TURN, the fifteenth dream.

The sound goes deeper, and no two breaths of it are the same. The breath on the screen now follows the one you hear. On headphones the sound is all around you, and it moves slowly.

THE WRIST The Watch app draws the night's ninety-six readings — where the breath went, where the floor came, how far there is left — and taps the breath through the glass with the screen down. THE TWO CROSSINGS The light goes down gold at sundown before it comes up rose at sunup. The day keeps its blue. THE NAME The machine is RRRz. Also here: the car's screen, a minute you can try from a code without installing anything, and the night written to the health store if you ask for it.
