Description

Mastodon is the largest decentralized social network on the internet. Instead of a single website, it’s a network of millions of users in independent communities that can all interact with one another, seamlessly. No matter what you’re into, you can meet passionate people posting about it on Mastodon!

Join a community and create your profile. Find and and follow fascinating folks and read their posts in an ad-free, chronological timeline. Express yourself with custom emoji, images, GIFs, videos, and audio in 500-character posts. Reply to threads and reblog posts from anyone to share great stuff. Find new accounts to follow and trending hashtags to expand your network.

Mastodon is built with a focus on privacy and safety. Decide whether your posts are shared with your followers, just the people you mention, or the whole world. Content warnings let you hide posts containing sensitive or triggering material until you're ready to engage with them. Each community has its own guidelines and moderators to keep its members safe, and robust blocking and reporting tools help prevent abuse.

More features:

• Dark Mode: Read posts in light, dark, or true black mode
• Polls: Ask followers for their opinion and tally the votes
• Explore: Trending hashtags and accounts are a tap away
• Notifications: Get notified about new follows, replies, and reblogs
• Sharing: Post directly to Mastodon from any share sheet in any app
• Cuteness: Our mascot is an adorable elephant, and you'll see them pop up from time to time

Mastodon is a registered nonprofit and development is supported directly by your donations. There’s no advertising, no monetization, and no venture capital, and we plan to keep it that way.

What’s New

Version 2024.3

Hello and welcome to the release notes of the 2024.03-version of Mastodon for iOS. We're working hard to fix the bugs we introduced a few versions earlier and so this release mostly contains bug fixes and improvements. And without further ado it's an honor to present the release notes:

- Have you checked out the new Dettings-area yet? We added some more options there. For example you can set the default language for posts there or activate if you want to be asked before unfollowing someone. (IOS-166)
- Pardon my french: We fixed a bug for french-speaking users. If you wanted to compose a long post, the app crashed when it was too long. Thanks to you for reporting it and thanks to us for fixing it. Great teamwork! (GH-1255)
- We switched the tabs on the notification-screen so that it matches the other Mastodon-apps. (IOS-240)
- When you wanted to reply to a status, your handle showed up twice. Sure, your name is really nice, but once is enough (GH-1254)
- We fixed the cursor-color for the input for image descriptions. Now it sparks more joy to write image descriptions. This is a subtle hint: WRITE IMAGE DESCRIPTIONS!. (GH-1253)
- The app has its own User-Agent now. It also constains the version number. (GH-1098)
- We removed the Community-tab from the Explore-tab. It was kind of hidden but don't worry: It'll come back soon, stay tuned! (IOS-236)
- We fixed a bug (twice!) that didn't let you edit your profile. Now you can change your handle and your bio again and upload a nice avatar. Sometimes you need more than one shot. (GH-1244, IOS-239, GH-1259)
- We cleaned up some dust in the project. This won't affect your daily use. Promise! (GH-1248, GH-1247, GH-1252)

That's it! We're steadily working on improving the app, adding new features (and the community-tab!) and fixing nasty bugs. And, as always, this wouldn't be possible without you! And you are also the reason why we keep making things better: It's some awesome and wholesome to see all you people actually use Mastodon. So: Keep using it, please!

I love this app.

I love this Mastodon for iOS app. It is accessible, very functional with voiceover. However, my main concern, is notifications. Voice the iOS screen, reader, is not announcing those like it’s supposed to whenever someone has posted/tooted some messages with links, whenever I follow somebody, or when the notifications are such anyone, or followers, voiceover is not announcing, even if I’m not within the app or not using it if I’m on a different app. Please explain to me why, this isn’t working for iOS correctly like it’s supposed to? It would be great if that can be fixed, and corrected. If somebody could fix it, that would be great. It would work great for everybody. Also, it would be beneficial to use the default system sounds, so that whenever someone has posted something, I can get a notification/banner and announcement right away when somebody has posted pieces of information on their timeline. so my question for you is, is this possible if that could be fixed? In the next few updates, for iOS 17 going forward? That would be awesome if that would happen, please and thank you.

Some things that could make the app great for VoiceOver

I’ve used Mastodon since early 2023, and while I broadly enjoy the freedom to see who I want in my timeline without ads, recommended content, and other algorithmic garbage, I feel the official Mastodon app could be better-optimized for VoiceOver.
As a VoiceOver user, I do not need to hear other users’ URLs immediately after hearing their display names, as I find that’s more superfluous information I have to listen to before hearing the content of a post. Therefore, there should be an option in the app’s settings that determines how users are identified in the Home timeline, which could help reduce excess verbosity.
Also, there does not seem to be any way I’ve found to clear notifications from within the app. On the web, I can reveal my notifications, click the “Show settings” button, followed by the “clear notifications” button to clear notifications from the web view, however they are still displayed in the app with no way to clear them. Similar to other apps which show notifications, there should be a “Clear” option in the actions rotor for notifications in the official Mastodon app, or alternatively, an option that’s revealed when triple-tapping the notification to access a context menu. Also, when clearing notifications from the web, they should also be automatically cleared from any apps signed into that account.

The Twitter killer!

If you have a Twitter account, you might as well tell your followers you’re moving onto Mastodon. This app is simply amazing, it has an almost “Discord”-esque vibe to how communities are structured and ran. Whilst still following the same overall “platform” guidelines. As an LGBTQ+ person, I’m so happy to have frontline representation within the app by having an entire “LGBT” server search section within the app. This level of inclusion, for MY community is something that even Discord doesn’t have, and I want to thank everyone at Mastodon for including this into the app! Seriously, it means a lot to have one more app (in an honestly small pool of apps) that says “Hey! We accept and support your community. Period, dot”. All-in-all, I very much love the community inclusion.

I also very much like the, well defined UI/UX, and its nice features such as using emoji like, Blobcat. Alongside super fast performance and rock hard stability, Mastodon is a good reason to finally abandon Twitter, and the toxicity, and lack of support or care from management.

10/10 app.
