UI is clunky and split transactions don’t work

While the UI has improved with the most recent update, it’s still difficult to use. Take a look at the defunct PocketQuicken for something that was a joy to use.

The two biggest functional problems are with categorizing transactions and split transactions. There doesn’t seem to be any consistency when setting a category, if it selects one for you and this you have to scroll around to choose the right one, or if the selection table is scrolled to the top with the search bar revealed, where one can start typing and get the right category quickly. Having the search bar always visible and focused, even for preselected categories would be a huge improvement!

Entering split transactions almost always fails. When adding new splits, the first (or last, sometimes) split will change from “Payment” to “Deposit” and sometimes the amounts will change. A common problem is with two splits, the first will change to “Deposit” and change to the amount of the second split, resulting in a zero-sum transaction. Worse yet, while you can edit the transaction, making sure it shows the splits correctly, it still only synced the incorrect transaction! Often I catch the changes to the splits before leaving the screen showing the splits and before saving the transaction. I make the corrections, save it, and IT IS STILL SAVED INCORRECTLY! These problems make the app almost unusable.

ICloud sync is here!

The long awaited iCloud sync is included in the July 2022 release, and it seems to work fine.

Accounts are all updated, almost all of my financial info is available when I need it.

Why only 4 stars? The mobile app doesn’t sync with investments, which occasionally limits the ability to enter a transaction where one side is an investment account. I understand investment accounts are complex, but that would be my “5 star” bar.

Still, Moneydance is my go-to app daily for financial management, and likely will be for a long time.

Great App With Near-Fatal Flaw

I'll start by saying how much I love Moneydance. I've been using it for months now and it is simply the best personal financial software for the Mac. It is what Quicken for Mac should have been.

Moneydance for the iPhone was a brilliant idea. With it, I can easily enter transactions on the go and later synchronize them with my Mac-based Moneydance. At least, that's the theory. The data entry portion of this app is flawless. In fact, it is as easy to enter transactions on my iPhone as it is on my Mac. Clearly, the developers spent a lot of effort toward getting the user interface right. Well done! However, the synchronizing feature leaves much to be desired. My iPhone is supposed to automatically synchronize with my Mac, but it doesn't. Well, some times it does. Other times, I have to re-start the app over and over and over again before synchronization occurs. This is very frustrating! I recommend the developers give up on the whole "automatic" idea. I have two other apps, SplashID and DocsToGo, that use manual synchronizing and they have never failed me. I suspect that Moneydance for the iPhone will be every bit as reliable once it is changed to manual synchronizing.
