Homeschooling my 5 year old / kindergartener, my #1 goal for the school year was to have him reading by the end of the year. We have worked on phonics all year and he can easily read single 3-4 letter words but I was still struggling to find books with simple sentences that were actually age appropriate enough he could sit and read a whole sentence or story. We’ve also tried lots of different learning / reading apps and I haven’t been that impressed. We tried this out a few weeks ago and it is a game changer!! In just a few weeks of doing it my son is now reading the simple stories / sentences on here easily. He’s started sounding out words in his head. I love this app because it specifically uses only the words and sounds your child is actually practicing in the stories so they aren’t seeing random complex words they’ve never seen. They also include sight words but it’s slowly, like 1-2 sight words are practiced and mastered over the course of several lessons before more are added in. If you are a homeschooling family or just determined to help your child learn to read I definitely recommend. There’s a quick 5 min placement test at the beginning you can take to skip the beginning lessons if your child has a knowledge of letter sounds and phonics already.

This app has been wonderful for my six-year-old and seven-year-old sons… We began homeschooling last year for their kindergarten and first grade years, where our concentration was mostly on reading. We used the teaching and methods found in the book “Teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons”. This app fits perfectly with that methodology, and into our homeschool curriculum! Especially with our 6 year old, now first grader, who is still growing in his phonics recall, sequencing of sound, and fluency… Every time he completes a level he smiles so big!! This app is the perfect balance between curriculum and fun! I do believe that his foundation rooted in the book based curriculum has allowed him to move with a greater pace than the typical beginner schedule, and this app allows an adult to unlock the next lessons as I see fit. In all, this app is great no matter the experience of the learner and the teacher (caregiver)! It’s a gem that is well worth the cost! Finally, the app suggestion and emphasis on parent involvement is so important and necessary. Knowing some families don’t have that type of culture however, this would still be a good gift for a child with a device, and could be completed with the help of an older sibling or relative!

My daughter absolutely loves this game. She asks for it everyday and knows her numbers enough to override the grownup settings and try to do more than one lesson a day. She loves the song and is excited about each of the modules. I had originally bought the book Teach your kids to read in 100 lessons, but was overwhelmed by where to start when I saw this app and it seemed similar. We took the assessment and started in lesson 12. I like that this app offers and assessment so we didn’t start at the begging and below her level. I like that modules that reinforce phonics, comprehension, letter recognition and letter writing and reading (the components behind the science of reading). The app itself is not buggy and is seamless on both my phone and the iPad. Overall this is a great app that we love. My only suggestion is that the grownup screen use simple addition rather than the word form of numbers, which is easy for a learning to read kid to override.
